Remodeling Bathrooms

Need help converting a closet to a bathroom please!

We are looking to convert our existing walk in closet into a master bathroom AND walk in closet.

I don’t have an eye for creating things out of nothing so I’m searching for any ideas that fits everything we need as well as maximizing our space. As you can see in the pictures, there is a low ceiling in the back corner. That is the roof line so we’ll have to work around that. Also, I think the window has to stay.

We don’t need/want a tub. Just a good sized shower and vanity with dual sink.

We are open to the idea of making the entire walk in closet the bathroom and building out the other closet in the bedroom instead.

Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful!

@beesneeds unfortunately, no current plumbing all the way up here and the other 3 bathrooms are on the other side of the house. So we know that part will be a bit of nightmare but also gives us some “creative freedom”

You are going to want more than 32" for the toilet. 36" is standard (and perhaps even code in some areas???? Not here in Maine but I heard people saying that on other forums...) We have 34" and it feels fine but I dont think I'd want to go much tighter. You could solve that simply by flipping the closet and shower. So, have your shower -rotated 90 degrees and witha glass end wall- at the end of the tub (which is a nice setup you can see in many bathrooms, the tub deck can actually protrude under the shower glass wall and be a ledge or seat in the shower). Then the passageway moves to the left, and you can steal a bit of space from the other closet for the toilet. Either that of have a shorter vanity. 48" isn't a size I'd fight for. It's too short for a double vanity, really (unless you're using one of the new two-faucet 'trough" styles) so why not go down to 42" and have a better toilet area? For resale, though, you should consider a double vanity. Some people I guess expert truly huge ones, like at least 5+' long. But you CAN get smaller ones, Ikea has some great ones for tight spaces. But if you're not selling anytime soon, do what YOU like!! (But I still think you'll want more toilet space...)

I just finished an addition to my twenties home. I tried everything to get a bath and closet with in a 13 x8 ft space but everything felt cramped and instead of having a tight closet and a tight bath with small shower and vanity we decided to add wardrobes to or large bath. I wanted custom but due to an unexpected health issue we scaled back budget and went with IKEA pax wardrobes they hold all of my most worn seasonal clothes and all of my husbands work clothes plus most worn casual wear. I like the reach in better for organization too. We still have the orginal reach in closet and a pine older armoire for extra items in the bedroom but never open it. Could you add wardrobes in the bedroom and have a nice sized bath with additional storage? I really love my large bath after years in this old house with tiny baths and closets. I was unconventional and like keeping my clothes in the bath which has two venting fans. it is my most private from the street area in my room so it is where I change anyway but the wardrobes take up so little space I could have placed them in the bedroom without losing much floor space too. in your second plan you can turn the vanity and make it longer and have the edge abut the shower with a half glass panel and than the door....

Thanks, I will post it in the bathroom forum as well. The fireplace will be a sealed natural gas unit. We don't have a firm budget, I expect the reno to be between 15 and 25 thousand, it all depends on what we end up changing. The door way can move in the walls but we would like the walls themselves to stay, just too many issues with moving them. I expect everything in the rooms will be new.

Hi, we are remodeling our master bathroom / walk in closet and are looking for ideas and opinions. I have attached the layout of the bathroom as well as a blank one. The curved shower wall is glass block and does protrude into the bedroom. We are thinking of a glass shower and stand alone tub. The closet has the standard pole and shelf design. It does not work terribly well. We are thinking of a wooden shelf/drawer design. We would also like to add a double sided, sealed, gas fireplace between the bath and bed rooms. If we can't make it work we will do a single sided in the bedroom. We can move the doorways but would like to keep the walls in the same locations. We would love to hear your ideas.

Are there windows in the bedroom? I would add those in and all the measurements for the bedroom too.

Ouch, ok. Do you have code requirements/restrictions you need to pay mind to? Are the flooring/supports of the room up to snuff for the weight of a bathroom there?

@beesneeds no restrictions that I know of. One of the contractors we spoke with said they’d probably redo the subflooring for the necessary support. I suppose it’s all to be seen when we get started, but we’re trying to come up with a layout that gives us what we’re looking for. Nice size bathroom and nice size closet :)

@k8cd the stairs you see in the bedroom measurements are behind a door leading up to the attic. The other doorway in the entrance into the room

Pick your poison. You have room for a code compliant bath, or a closet. Not both. That space is not as large as you think it is. Plus the sloped roof section will not work well for a bathroom, as there are minimum required head heights for fixtures, and minimum clearance spacing required for them as well.
