some sheet vinyl is floatable. so maybe you could do that yourself? Armstrong has some - and maybe congoleum does. I saw some at a floor store last month and was thinking of that for my kitchen. maybe earth werks has some also. I'm pretty fussy about the color / pattern for mine so I'm having a difficult time finding something I like. but check out the vinyl floating floors. the edgings would be covered / held down by the quarter round trim. I think the vinyl I saw was about 3.00-3.50 a sq ft. for my small kitchen it'd be about 300-350.00. my dbf thought that was too much tho. I don't.

I was just thinking that, moonshadow - I looked at the picture and said "well, doesn't that look familiar!" Mine was Cryntel Italia Travertine from Lowes. I frankly wouldn't hesitate for a moment to use it again if it suited this house (but it doesn't), because we loved it. For various reasons I absolutely loathe sheet goods and will never voluntarily have them in my house again. BTW, I'll tell you something, having the vinyl tile in the upstairs bathroom at previous house actually saved our @sses. A leak developed under the sink and popped up a couple of the tiles in front of the sink. Since the water didn't come up on the surface of the flooring (it was coming out the BACK of the vanity, so even if there had been sheet vinyl down it still most likely would have gone underneath the flooring), had we not had the vinyl tile, we wouldn't have known about the leak until the kitchen ceiling was damaged! We fixed the leak, dried out the subfloor, glued the tiles back down, and Bob's your uncle. If you've got one of those families that slops gallons of water around with every bath and shower and mopping, you're probably better off with sheet goods, but if you restrict the water to your basic post-bathing drips and damp mopping I think it's just fine. We plan to use either lino tile or VCT (depending on the budget) for the kitchen/mudroom here when we get to tear up the ugly, cheap, impractical sheet vinyl (what moron puts a white floor in a mudroom in New England, where the four seasons are Mud, Blackflies, Mud, and Snow?) and are thinking seriously about putting down a liquid waterproofing membrane like RedGuard over the subfloor just for insurance. As for going over sheet vinyl, in the long term you have a potential for something called "plasticizer migration" which can loosen the bond between the sheet vinyl and the vinyl tile, although according to the person on the Flooring forum I was talking with about installation this is less of a problem with a) a better quality tile than the flimsy, floppy junk, b) the additional-adhesive method, although it may take a little bit longer for the adhesive to set up, and c) taking the time to strip off any dirt and grease and scuff up the shiny surface. We're talking a matter of years here, though, and it doesn't always happen. Yeah, just call me the (good) vinyl tile cheerleader. ;-)

We saw it used on one of the HGTV shows a few weeks ago--don't remember which one. The price they quoted was WAAAAAAY more expensive than most tile (exception being the hand made/specialty tile). DH & I looked at each other and said the same thing--why not just go with regular tile and save a bundle? With that being said, I could see someone using the peel & stick and feeling that the price was affordable as it would be something they could definitely do themselves where if they were to use real tile they would sub the job out--likely a wash in price at that point.

I am not an expert but I don't think they would last long in a shower condition. I am basing this on my friend's apartment which had peel and stick on the floor of her kitchen. She used my steam mop which was hardly industrial strength to clean her kitchen floor and it screwed up the glue so that the tiles started lifting up. When she replaced the floor, she actually used my little Bissel steam mop to lift up the tiles. Based on this I would assume that the moisture and steam from a shower over a relatively short period of time would dissolve the glue. In general the fiberglass bath/tub shower enclosures don't need waterproofing above where they end. When I had one before my remodel it was just plain wall that was painted since the shower head was at a lower height than where the fiberglass "wall" ended and therefore almost no water hit it.
