Need Help Correcting Last Year's Mistakes
Comments (7)There isn't a mistake you've mentioned that we probably all haven't done too, so don't feel bad. I live in the burbs, so I ammended all my beds when we initially landscaped with adapteds and exotics that needed alot of TLC. Now that I've changed to WELL adapteds and natives, they got the benefit of ammended soil. I have clay too. You probably don't really need to ammend you soil - as your garden matures and you use leaves and mulch, and tend to your microherd and earthworm population, they will do that work for you over time. What I've done with areas that retain too much water or is poorly drained, is to plant things in those places that like, or can tolerate poorly drained soil. They are out there, you just have to research them and try them. When transplanting plants that are too close together, I usually wait until I see new growth in spring and dig as much of the root system as I can get and then replant. You'll need to water those regularly just as if you were planting new plants. Give them a soil drench at planting time with some liquid seaweed or Miracle Grow, or whatever you use as a liquid fertilizer. If they are a deciduous shrub, cut them back about a 3rd to compensate for lost roots. Not knowing what plants you've planted I can't say when you should start seeing new growth. I've got things popping up now in DFW, but I also have some that I know won't start showing growth till April or so. I would think at least some of your perennials should start showing some new growth now. Not ever grown a Texas Mountain Laurel, so can't help with that one. Part of the fun of gardening is trying things to see what works, and remembering the failures so you don't repeat. Just make it fun and don't fret over the failures - just carry on....See MoreHELP! Comments (6)As for the aphids I was trying to attract them to the vinegar which kills them. And that is the primary mis-understanding. You never want to attract them to anything for any reason. They may or may not come all on their own and if they don't why attract them. Plus plain water can kill them too without any risk to the plants. So please get rid of these vinegar and soap containers from near your plants. They pose much more of a threat than even aphids do. While flooding the area will dilute the soap and vinegar it will also flood the plant roots. Since they are only a week old I'd probably move them to an uncontaminated spot. As for seeds it may have contacted, I'd plan on having to re-seed once the area has been flushed out well. Dave...See MoreHelp! I've made terrible mistakes with LR (pics)
Comments (66)I love the furniture you've picked out. It will look bright and cheery and just the feeling of the inspiration pics you've posted in your other threads...once you paint! Paint the darn room already! :) My last house had muddy mauve and no natural light (houses on three sides and a big porch on the other). As soon as I painted, it changed everything. Even my mood was better. And if you have a front porch, I suggest you paint the porch ceiling blue. It made a big difference looking out my window and seeing Martha Stewart's Porch Ceiling Blue. Almost as good as being able to see the sky. :) Let your room evolve. Don't feel like it has to be "done" right away. Take your time finding art and accessories that you love. You're doing great and you're going to have a lovely space to enjoy....See MoreShould I embrace or correct this mistake?
Comments (22)In that plan, there is 5 feet between the range and peninsula. I'm using the IKEA planner so not much makes sense. :D Right now we have almost 6 feet and I don't find that too far. The final location of the peninsula will be based on what we do with the door and how much room we need for the table. Replacing the 6 foot windows with a slider (south of the table) would make sense for traffic flow when we have big parties but that is currently only once or twice a year. If we just put a window in the kitchen, we'd also add some kind of ledge outside and use it as a pass through. We have found 5 foot sliders but they are no more roomy for the person trying to get through than a 30" hinged door, and much more expensive. Nuccia, in addition to the thrash pullout at the end of the peninsula (which we're sort of used to), we'll have something under the cleanup sink, probably attached to the door and similar to what you linked to. The peninsula is going to be the main prep space and we'll have 30"+ between the sink and fridge so I don't think the area next to the range is critical for that. It would be rare that the door will interfere with indoor cooking but it could happen on occasion. I'll have to balance the hassle factor of walking around vs. a swing door....See Moredani_m08
