Does anyone have/had Alder cabinets? Hickory?!
Comments (23)I am surprised that no one else has found that the alder cabinets are better on the budget than other wood species. Could this be a regional phenomenon? When I was first pricing cabinets, I found across several different cabinet lines that there was a 15-25% savings when using alder instead of cherry and approximately a 10% savings over maple. We were only pricing all-plywood construction so that may have influenced the price differentials somewhat. These prices were not for knotty alder but the regular alder. BTW, all of the cabinets above look beautiful! And, for the OP- $8K is not a lot to outfit the entire house in cabinetry...it goes fast!!! It sounds as if you rec'd a prelim bid from HD, so maybe you'll end up okay. But, add in any crown molding, rope molding, corbels, light rails, bump outs, better constructed boxes/doors, etc., and you'll be sunk.......See MoreDoes anyone have oak cabinets anymore?
Comments (39)@sombreuil I guess I’m an outlaw as I just put in limestone floor in Versailles pattern on the first floor. I used to love oak and hate the orange color but now I have a huge aversion to wood kitchen as my in laws have oak everywhere. Their house is so dark that I carry a flashlight with me because I keep tripping over all the small carpets underfoot. Their cabinets were custom but the oak has gone orange. It was hellish trying to find paint to tone down the kitchen. With oak walls, ceiling beams, floors, cabinets, trims and all furniture (big and small) in dark oak, it’s very claustrophobic and oppressive to be in the house. We remodeled their house recently due to flood and they put everything back the same and added more oak in any area that did not have it before. My advice is choose what you love but use moderation in the amount of wood....See MoreDoes Anyone have White Conestoga Cabinets???
Comments (22)Hi All - thank you so much for your input. Since posting, I finally settled on the Frosty White. Mobydog...I am also ordering through Brian Long at the Cabinet Joint. He has been great and very patient with me! Oldbat2be...thank you, thank you, thank you! I am so happy to see pics of Frosty White. It makes me feel even more sure that I have made the right decision on the whites. Not nearly as stark as I thought it would be. Please send more! Your kitchen is INCREDIBLE! So happy to connect with someone who has the same cabinets. Did you assemble and install yourself? If so, how did you find the process? Also, love the Torquay. Is that honed or polished? Do you love it?? Have been dreaming about honed carrera forever but have been hesitant over durability issues. But if Torguay gives the same feel without looking 'fake'...then I want to explore it as an option. ellendi...thank you so much. I am one of those 'must do it myself types' and Conestoga's quality can not be beat for RTA. Boops2012...I realized after I posted this that I put the wrong image in...I didn't think anyone would notice!! I have been debating where to put my fridge and wall oven. The clearance is 42" between the front of the fridge or DWO to the peninsula and I have been simulating it at home to see how it feels. I actually will likely put the fridge at the back now and put the DWO where the pantry is (further down toward the living room). That's how I feel today anyway...any input is very much appreciated. Thank you for calling attention to it! buffetgirl...that is so right on... thank you for that reinforcement! I kept coming back to the truer of the whites and kept thinking the same thing!...See MoreDoes anyone have white subway tile with stained wood cabinets?
Comments (9)Thank you everyone- your kitchens are lovely! I can only hope mine turns out as nice when it is finally finished. Vjrnts: Your soapstone is so cool- what type is that? My cabs are maple but a similar shade so it really gave me an idea of what it would look like. Bunglogirl: Thanks for the pic-- I have the same sink - it looks really nice with the tile. Sarchlos-remoodeler: if you can dig up that pic it would be greatly appreciated- sounds pretty. Thank you all....See MoreKathleen Spero
