Favorite Pink Climber
Comments (12)I'd like to recommend David Austin's Mortimer Sackler. I have been looking at it in a vase today and it takes my breath away. The only drawback I know of: it only lasts maybe 3-4 days in a vase. I may have figured out why it isn't better known? Wrong name, sounds too plain! It's not a plain rose at all! It needs a romantic-sounding name to fit its delicate character, something like 'Soft Symphony' perhaps. Thornless, nicely fragrant, delicately beautiful form of moderately large blooms. Perfect for a no-spray yard, the same rose can be used as either a shorter climber or a shrub. Very flexible stems, so it will easily work to wind around an obelisk too. It's close to a true light pink (but not a pale blush pink), with only a hint of lavendar in the outermost petals when they first open. The picture of it on the David Austin website shows exactly what the blooms are looking like here. I also love Cornelia, though it has noticeably more thorns than Mortimer Sackler. (Thus far we haven't seen any thorns on Mortimer Sackler here at all.) But Cornelia has all those dots of strawberry-colored buds that look spectacular with its prolific small beautiful pink-apricot blooms. Cornelia might be slightly less disease resistant than Mortimer Sackler, but would probably work. Lavendar Lassie is iffy in terms of blackspot by the end of the season in the Southeast, but that might not be a worry for you there. I'm not familiar with Clair Matin. Best wishes, Mary Here is a link that might be useful: Mortimer Sackler...See Moresuggestions for a great pink
Comments (15)I have a Baronne Prevost (hybrid perpetual) that I love-nice strong/medium pink with a lighter reverse, heady fragrance. Holds it's color in full sun which is better than some other roses I have. Just got it this year so I can't say how big it will get but it just finished it's second flush. Mine seems much more cupped than most pictures I've seen-it's from J&P. I'm also looking at Duchesse de Brabant (tea)-folks on this forum report that it's smaller than Mrs. BR Cant-'The organic rose garden' says it's cupped, double and intensely fragrant, as well as healthy, beautiful and easy. Looks to be a pretty light pink-might bleach out in your heat? Jubilee Celebration (Austin) is fragrant, beautiful salmon pink, reports are that it stays small. A young, own root rose for me, stems are too small to hold flower up so far. I'll be watching to see what other folks suggest!...See MoreHelp me choose a pink
Comments (25)Bonica is a 6 x 6 shrub here, or could be kept around 4 x 4 with summer pruning. Attractive scentless clusters, good repeat for a shrub, dark foliage fairly susceptlble to blackspot (not as bad as Royal Bonica), bushy plant reportedly cane hardy into parts of zone 5. For 3 x 3 you need a really small plant like Pretty Jessica, or else plant a bushy (not leggy) floribunda and cut back some after every flush....See MoreClimbing Rose I.D.
Comments (8)Thank you trospero and Collin! I just love this rose. Yesterday I spotted a few Evelyn roses intermingled with ZD! I really need to move Evelyn from there because I don't get to see her up close. Thanks again all of you for your help....See Moreoursteelers 8B PNW
