suggestions for a great pink

Hi. I'm hoping someone (some people) could please help me with some suggestions. I am in love with the older-looking roses...the cupped shape, many petals, wonderful scent...The size of the bloom does not have to be big but I am looking for a medium pink rose that is fully cupped, not frilly, many petalled, and with a good scent that blooms year round. Actually, I am in zone 11--though my zone says 9. Must have been a slip...Right now my star performer is overnight scentsation from nor'east...Believe it or not, it was this rose that got me to really looking at the antique roses. I'm hoping to have a small collection of old roses with "history" that are similar to overnight scentsation. I'm hoping to start with pink then move on to white, red (though I have cramoisi superior cl.), yellow, and lavender.

Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, zone 11... where do you live in the U.S.?

I'm thinking you might love 'Hermosa'... others might chime in with their favorite teas, but that one gets my vote.

Lee, are you on the East coast? West Coast? Texas? Will you be spraying? These are questions that most will need to know before offering suggestions. Then, how big of a rose do you want? For example, some of the old Teas will get 10ft x10ft or so in the warmest zones.

Hi again Jess Aloha gets very bushy and dense after a few years though healthy and gives lots of flowers. Has to be carefully pruned not to look messy up an arbor. Coral Dawn is easy to train up an arbor and easy to maintain, likes lots of organic fertilizer. Is has red thorns but I would not say very thorny, there are thorns though, less than New Dawn. If your arbor is rather wide you might want to plant two plants of Coral Dawn. Lots of light fresh fragrance. Perhaps there is a Coral Dawn growing near you so you can see it for real.

I suggested the Clematis for the spot because I wasn't sure a climbing rose would work there. I am imagining that a rose vigorous enough to grow into the cedars would also want to get wide and massive, and keeping it attached to the cedar may get annoying. Clematis montana cultivars do get big, but their stems are thin and light, and will climb on their own into the cedars once they reach the lower branches. If you want later color that isn't dark, consider Clematis virginiana or Clematis flammula (both are fragrant white Autumn-blooming clematis) or the pink-edged white 'Rubromarginata' hybrid (also very fragrant). To break down the clematis "groups" simply, Type 1 are large plants with small flowers, and bloom in late Spring, a little earlier than most of the once-blooming roses. They bloom on old wood, so if you need to prune, you do it right after they flower, giving them time to grow more wood to be hardened over winter and bloom the following Spring. These include the montanas and Clematis armandii (both are fragrant), as well as some others. Type 2 are medium-sized climbers, usually with large flowers. They bloom on old and new wood, and usually twice -- once in late Spring to early Summer (usually just after the Type 1) on old wood, then they pause during the peak of Summer, and bloom again in August/September on new wood. Most don't need much pruning at all besides tidying up in the Spring. Type 3 includes the non-climbing herbaceous clematis, large-flowered Summer-blooming clematis like 'Jackmanii', the small-flowered Summer-blooming species and close hybrids, and the small-flowered Autumn-blooming species and close hybrids (the latter are often fragrant). Those that bloom in Summer usually start just as the Type 2 finish their fist bloom, while the Autumn-blooming ones usually bloom when the Type 2 are finishing their second bloom. Type 3 blooms only on new wood, and so are typically pruned harshly to keep them from getting bare at the base. The general rule of thumb is to find the lowest set of healthy leaf buds, and prune to just above them in the Spring. This might be only 12" from the ground. Of course, you could leave them unpruned higher up if they're trained into trees. In that case, I'd just snip them right above where they first reach into the branches, and only worry about pulling out last year's growth if it looks obvious and messy. :-) ~Christopher

I have three Edens. They are incredibly gorgeous blooms, and if you're going for the cottage look, you can't go wrong with these. I have one 3 year old trained on my low front fence. It's got a spread of probably 7 feet each side, and is throwing new canes all along the horizontals (the new canes, called laterals, are the ones which will give a bloom, I think...). It is going to be covered with blooms in about 2 weeks, is healthy (in my climate), has not shown a bit of mildew or rust. The next one is only 1 year old, and has just now started considering growing. LOL. "First year sleep, second year creep, third year LEAP" as the saying goes, so that's all right...it's right on schedule. The third Eden I have is in a pot. It is growing like crazy right now, canes extending probably about 5 1/2-6 feet, and I've started working on pulling the large canes horizontal so that laterals will grow and give me blooms. It's about 2.5 years old now, and has started "leaping" early. I plan on transplanting it onto the fence in either late October or November. What I like about this particular rose is that for me, it's not fragrant. Which means it's perfect for the sidewalk fence - because then my neighbors and assorted dog walkers don't take the blooms. :) They leave the blooms on the rose, and it really creates a country/cottage look to the low fence. As a matter of fact, I like this rose so much I called the nursery yesterday to see if they had a 2-3 year old climber...and they don't. Give it some thought...my Edens, here in zone 9, are doing exceptionally well and that's despite me not knowing too much about roses in general. Best- Herding Cats

I used, upon suggestion from an issue of House Beautiful a few years back, one called "Old Country" in my guest room. I have white trim and used RH Baby and Child sheets and duvets in pink, white and gray stripe (sheets), duvet is in gray. Beds are black twin beds with panel headboards and footboards. I LOVE this room! Used the Old Country on the walls and ceiling (vaulted). I get tons of compliments on this room! Very restful! Good luck with your search..Wheatberry is pretty, too, but may be too beige.

Well, when I ran the zone "thingy" it said that I was in zone 11. I live in Hawaii. The temp. around here has been averaging between the high 80's to (maybe) mid 90's--except outside my garage on the carport--the concrete pushes the temp. up to 102 sometimes! I haven't had to spray much (mostly for aphids) until recently. Now I am using neem regularly for spider mites and thrips. I think I'm having all this insect activity because of the construction going on around here, hot weather, and my neighbors recently dug up all of their red ginger causing the bugs to "move house" (they never did take care of the plants).
As for the size of the rose: the flower does not have to be big. I've always loved miniatures and the cramoisi when it flowers reminds me of a miniature. I just really love the full, cupped, many petalled-ness of the ogr. The size of the plant may be an issue. I think I have enough climbers for now...and I'm not really looking for a 10'x10' plant though plants seem to get a lot larger than what catalogs advertise.

'Hermosa' is a relatively small plant compared to many OGRs, with smallish blooms having a great form and plenty of petals to suit your fancy, with a nice fragrance that is essentially bourbon in its makeup - candy-sweet China plus a touch of Damask. It's very healthy (which you probably don't need to worry about), blooms pretty much continuously, and it's pink with flowers on the small side. Am I missing anything? :)

I'd go with the chinas and teas, they can stand your hotter temperatures. Comtesse de CaÃ¿la has wonderful pink-sherbet coloring.

I have a Baronne Prevost (hybrid perpetual) that I love-nice strong/medium pink with a lighter reverse, heady fragrance. Holds it's color in full sun which is better than some other roses I have. Just got it this year so I can't say how big it will get but it just finished it's second flush. Mine seems much more cupped than most pictures I've seen-it's from J&P. I'm also looking at Duchesse de Brabant (tea)-folks on this forum report that it's smaller than Mrs. BR Cant-'The organic rose garden' says it's cupped, double and intensely fragrant, as well as healthy, beautiful and easy. Looks to be a pretty light pink-might bleach out in your heat?
Jubilee Celebration (Austin) is fragrant, beautiful salmon pink, reports are that it stays small. A young, own root rose for me, stems are too small to hold flower up so far.
I'll be watching to see what other folks suggest!

One you might consider is "Spice" a found rose from Bermuda which I'd think would love Hawaii.

Heritage if you have the space for a big shrub.
Paul Neyron if you want a darker pink.
Pink Peace - it is a modern rose but not a 'tight spiral', actually quite loose when opened and its fragrance is wonderful.

How about Jacques Cartier or Compte De Chambord? The English Rose "Cottage Rose" is very beautiful with very much an old rose look. I'm not sure if any of these are suitable for zone 11 but otherwise fit your criteria.

My personal favorite is Grandmother's Hat.
I don't know if your area is too humid for it, but it is a wonder in Coastal Southern California.

My favorite pink is Duchesse de Brabant. She has medium pink blooms that are cupshaped and she blooms constantly. She suffers from no disease in my area--Northern CA. She can get large, but I keep her at about 4' X 4'. Purportedly, this is the rose that Teddy Roosevelt used for his lapel button. AND she is very smelly!

Thank you all for the suggestions! I think I'm looking at hermosa, grandmother's pink, and spice...so far. I looked at all the roses so far in the help me find but I couldn't find compte de chambord. Now, I can't say that I'm not considering any of the others--just that what I have found out so far about the above three has intrigued me. Thanks so much! So...any suggestions for white, yellow, lavender, and red?

you have some great suggestions, many of my favourites, but ... what about louise odier? it fits all of your criterion: deeply cupped, double old rose form, clear rose pink, etc.
