Avocado pruning

We have a little avocado plant, which we pruned quite recently to prevent it from growing 1 long spindly stem without any branches. Within a week, however, the plant decided to pop out this one massive arm on the side, without any indication or desire to grow a second one.

My question is, should we leave the plant alone, should we cut it at marking 1 or 2, or do you have another suggestion?

it still has the seed attached.. what exactly is your hurry with the TREE ..

tree time is counted in decades.. and you are already contemplating your second pruning on a plant that is still attached to the seed ...

im wondering if your plant i lacking light in that it se3ems to be etoliated.. and leaning ..

and your media look like straight peat moss???. is it???

and why isnt it outside for summer???

We read everywhere, that as soon as the avocado TREE roots you should put it, together with the seed, in a pot (if you aren't able to plant it directly outside). And as soon as the avocado is about 12 inches tall, you should trim it for the first time. We are no experts, so we followed this advice.

No, the media does not contain any peat.

The plant isn't outside because it is very hot and windy. Should we put it outside regardless?

antea90 - What do you mean " my avocado soil was contaminated with mold" ? Sometimes beneficial Fungi (like Mycorrhizae) will grow/live in soil. Even if you buy a new bag of soil; and don't use it right away, perhaps a couple of months, when you do finally open it, there may be a web like network of fungus on the top. People do often mistake this for mold, but in fact, it show's that your soil is teaming with life. That's a good thing! Hope your tree bounces back, good luck. Rob

mc...I think the choice to prune is yours. I would wait until January to do radical pruning. This allows the tree to grow and roots to flourish this summer before slowing down in winter. Be advised...an ungrafted fruit tree almost always gives unsatisfactory fruit...if at all.

All I can tell you banana fan is that my two avocado trees grew fairly slowly the first couple of years, then took off. I think they like to establish a strong root system first before shooting up. My trees are both Mexican varieties.

There is really nothing mystical about it ! And anything can be root pruned although it can slow new growth significantly, but that is sorta the point :-) I grow a lot of trees in containers and I root prune every 3-5 years. Pull out the root ball, carefully lay on its side and with a pruning saw or serrated kitchen knife, slice cleanly through the bottom of the rootball, removing an inch or two. For larger trees, I do the same along the sides, slicing off about a inch of roots/media. For smaller trees or perennials, I just sluice off as much potting soil as possible and trim the roots manually. For containerized trees, I'd recommend doing this when they are dormant so as to minimize shock. If you must, do it as early in the growing season as you can manage.
