Huge Wisteria

Bristow

I have some very old trees in my garden and a very old and huge wisteria has climbed completely up into one of them. THe trunk of the wisteria is bigger than the average persons thigh! My concern is that the wisteria may kill the "host" tree, or may simply become so heavy that the tree will collapse onto my house. I have had this problem already with the biggest bouganvillea I have ever seen, which caused a very large (and admittedly worm-ridden) tree to blow over in strong winds. Should I deal with the wisteria by cuttin it off at ground level or are my fears of the tree dying or collapsing unfounded?
