afraid of pressure canner
Comments (63)I don't see it a hijack, but maybe important enough for its own new thread. First, not being familiar with BJs, I looked that up and may be missing the one you mention....I find a 6.5 qt size for approx $25, its definitely a cooker, not canner. To be considered safe to pressure can in, it must be large enough to hold 4 Qt size jars sitting on a rack, even if you don't plan to use quarts in it, it has to be at least that minimum size or is only a cooker for uncanned food. My 8 qt Mirro falls short by about an eyelash of the lid seating firmly with 4 quart jars in it - and that one I only cook in, not can. Those glass topped stoves can vary, some you may can on, others it will void the stove warranty. My sis-in-laws is JennAir and she has put her really weighty All American canner on it the last couple of years. It hasn't harmed the stove, but the problem I find in watching her can is the stove cycles up and down in heat setting, seems to be a built safety mechanism of the stove itself. She came very close to losing her 10#s pressure several times during the course of canning tuna 100 minutes last month - and I was wishing she had just brought her things here and used my electric stove with additional canning burner. Some times those older canners are great finds. Is there some kind of model or description on the bottom that would tell us what it is?...See MoreMirro pressure canner on glass-top stove
Comments (20)Melly, I'm remembering the conversation we had last season about that three-piece weight. I got mine nearly 30 years ago from Presto. At that time they specifically listed it in their canner manual as an accessory. It's intriguing that sometime later they quit recommending it, though as far as I know they've always offered the part, and now they're back saying it's OK again. Strangely enough, my All-American canner came with just that set-up, a gauge and a three-piece weight. They state specifically to go by the weight and that the gauge is just a visual reminder, nothing more. I've been fortunate. The Presto weight and the gauge have always been in sync, but if they weren't, like you I'd trust the weight since it's been machined for accuracy. I do like having the gauge, though. Comments (20)I don't believe either new Presto canner comes with the 3 piece weight set. http://www.pressurecooker-outlet.com/prestop23qtcan.htm Perhaps not from that particular source but there are many sources and a VERY wide price range on them. And there are many discussions here about that particular canner and its sources that the search will pull up. One source is Walmart. It sells the 16 qt. with the 3 piece weight set. So does amazon.com and Target or did last time the question came up. But sure you can also buy the one with the gauge and then buy the 3 piece weight set for it too. The advantage to the 23 quart is it can also be used as a BWB. The 16 qt. can't. As to the Mirro part of your question, I can't really say. I fist noticed their reviews start going down hill 5 or 6 years ago about the time most of them came with the different handles and no gauge. Mine is more than 20 years old. But the serious problem with them is finding parts now and in the future. On some forum folks that have them post they have been stockpiling parts now as they find them in case of future needs. Comments (2)One nice thing about Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry Co. (WAFCO--they make the All American products) is that they still sell parts for all their pressure cookers and sterilzers. My guess is that you could replace the vent pipe, the gauge and get a jiggle weight from WAFCO and you'd be good to go--IF the gauges and vent pipes are threaded identically. The only question I would have: does that sterilizer have a rubber blow out plug? I can't tell from the picture. If it does not have that safety feature, I don't know if I would want to risk using it without that... The link is to WAFCO All American parts dept.; might want to give them a call or an email to see if this is a feasible conversion. They also sell tops for their canners; if you could ascertain that the bottom of the 1915 sterilizer is the same as the bottom of one of the pressure canner models, you could just order the top...but then you're approaching the cost of a full new unit. Hope you succeed. I have a 930 and love it. I had a 921 and gave it to a relative. I'm sold on their quality.
