Thank you both - ptboise and hoovb - for your advice. Especially about it not getting that 'large'. All the data I've read about this rose show it growing to 12-15ft....it sounds more like...only if you are lucky! It's really a beautiful rose.....and some parts of my yard is extremely sunny and other parts are not. I'm assuming if it's in a sunny//semi-shade spot it just won't get that many blooms? Oh yeah, and we do have Nematodes! ....

Dear esteemed members, After more than 5 years, I am pretty sure that the pink blend rose is the white sport of “Madame Caroline Testout”, HT “Admiral Duwey” (1899). Although I have just received some pictures from the Sangerhausen, they were enough for me to identify my unknown rose as this old “Madame Caroline Testout” white sport. I would possibly discard some other related roses, such as “Frau Dr. Krüger” since it has golden-yellow undertones, borne mostly solitary and occasional repeat later in the season. My rose does not have golden-yellow undertones, usually blooms in clusters and has a profuse fall bloom. HT “Grossherzogin Victoria Melitta” has white or white blend flowers with a yellow center and a strong fragrance, while the unknown rose has not any yellow coloring and none to mild fragrance. “Mme Gustave Metz” could have been another possibility but it is too pink, at least in my humble opinion. Furthermore, it has a long pointed form while the unknown rose is more globular. “La Favourite” was also a globular HP, related with “Mme. Caroline Testout” and its descendants, with globular form and it is a good fall bloomer (like my rose), but it has a deep rose color that turns soft pink as the rose ages. Having said that, I am quite sure that the found rose from that old garden in BA is HT “Admiral Duwey” (John H. Taylor, 1899), although some more pictures would help me to confirm this properly. Hello from St John USVI, Geostv you are getting good advice. Wait till you get settled in to do any garden planning or planting. We moved from zone 5/6 to 10/11. I was so excited I could garden year around I ordered plants, had things dug up from my garden and sent and bought lot's and lot's of books. I have found my best source of gardening books is to go to a Barnes and Noble in Miami which has the closest zone to St John. Start a calendar diary of where the sun is and the average wind on each area of your new home. When you are closer to the equator the positon of the sun is dramatically different each time of year. I put an orchid garden in an area which I thought was shaded only to find a month later it got direct sun and burned all the plants. My garden workers which get $25.00 an hour laugh at me and tell me they will never be out of work as I am constantly moving everything.I started my garden in 1997 and it is a huge learning curve. I have learned that the plants and look I want and what will do well are not necessarily cooperative. Other factors I had never considered cows that roam the island and feast on Hibiscus or goats that can climb sheer rocks and eat anthing and everything in your garden. Our entire garden is fenced and I have a cattle guard across the entrance or there would be no garden. On a happpier note I now have a prized and beautiful garden I have just about every tropical plant and some that I have challenged to grow I can't live without such as roses.I have been very successful with Vanda orchids from Thailand heirloom roses from Vintage gardens and Antique Rose Emporium and Plumeria which other gardenweb members have shared with me.I will email you the titles of my favorite tropical gardening books. So many have great pictures but no real information.If I can share cuttings or seeds of anything let me know. I wish I could figure out how to post pictures on Gardenweb but I am technically challenged. I can email pictures with no problem. What I read again and again is that the best classes of roses in the southeast would be Chinas, Teas, Noisettes, Tea-Noisettes, some Hybrid Musks, and some Polyanthas -- especially those with Tea ancestry, like 'Cecile Brunner' and 'Perle d'Or' among the Polyanthas, and 'Prosperity' and 'Buff Beauty' among the Hybrid Musks. These are CLASSES of roses, so within each are many different individual cultivars. For shadier areas, of the types I mentioned, look for old non-Tea Noisettes of the 'Blush Noisette' family, Hybrid Musks, as well as some Polyanthas for smaller plants. And look to see if 'R. moschata' would fit in your Georgia garden. It starts blooming in mid to late Summer and continues to frost. When it's mature and established, the fragrance on a warm humid night would be heavenly. As far as any other roses go, it's very hit-or-miss within a class -- there may be a handful among the Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, Shrubs, etc. that work, as well as many that don't. Generally, the OGR classes are grouped more by ancestry, whereas the modern roses are grouped more by appearance. Hybrid Musks and Polyanthas are technically modern, but they do have similar ancestry -- both being basically derived from Multiflora with China, Tea, Noisette, and/or early Hybrid Tea (in the case of some Hybrid Musks) mixed in. Consider roses from these groups as generally being "safe bets" for filling the garden. Carefully research which cultivars of other groups are known to do well for your area, and don't take that to mean that ALL or even MANY of that group would also do well. For example, the Austins are a really mixed bag. There may be a few which work for you, but likely many more which don't. :-) ~Christopher
