Cast Iron Shower Receptors - worth it?
Comments (12)Thanks! We are very happy with the way it turned out. We were walking that fine line between wanting the bathroom to look nice (opens to the FR) and not wanting to spend a fortune on a guest bathroom. The top edge of the "curb" (the curved part) is the pan, the front part is tile (cut pieces of the shower wall tile). mydreamhome, I use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the shower pan and on our Toto cast iron bathtubs when the no-slip grips start to look grungy. I had called Kohler about using it when we got the receptor and got their okay, and I think I did the same with Toto. Lysol Basin, Tub, and Tile cleaner (in the aerosol can) works pretty well, too for regular cleaning (I only use it in the tubs and the shower pan, not on the walls since we have natural stone border tile in all three bathrooms), but when the grips themselves are dirty, Magic Eraser does a better job (quicker and less elbow grease!)....See MoreFor those of you with the Kohler cast iron shower pans....
Comments (14)I plan to build a curbless (ADA roll-in) shower. I don't need to build up a curb or tile the entrance. Just as an FYI, I will never have a curbed shower again. It is a trip hazard and my friends that need canes/walkers/wheelchairs (some of them injured as children and young adults) cannot get past them. Limits resale to have a curbed shower. The curb itself is the problem, not necessarily the size of the shower. I think that is why most alcove/corner shower pans are being designed to be curbless on one side--makes it 'universally' accessible. Also, it is very easy to waterproof the entire bathroom floor these days. No curb or curtain or glass is actually needed, which saves lots of money and helps it dry out much faster!...See MoreCast Iron Shower receptors
Comments (4)Thanks for the feedback! I was shocked to see that the one we ordered is listed as 193 pounds. Its the Salient 30X60 with the right hand drain. This allows us to replace the tub and not have to modify the plumbing. I will need a body or two to help me set it in place. We just finalized our tile for the shower today. We went with Ming green marble which will also go on the room floor(tumbled though). There will also be about 12 sqft of 4x12 glossy glass tile in two vertical bars in the shower. I will document my before shots and progress through the project here. This is a very small 5 by 8 foot bathroom and we have a 2nd to do further down the road. I've done a little tile work and the other half and I will be doing most of the install, less plumbing for the new shower system. Here is a link that might be useful: Kohler Salient...See MoreOpinions Please. Shower curtain or shower door???
Comments (43)This is a no-brainer for me - - SHOWER CURTAIN!!!! I LOVE the look of a traditional tie back fabric curtain on the outside of my walk-in shower with a mold and mildew resistant plastic shower curtain (NOT A LINER) inside. The fabric curtain stays beautiful and only gets washed once in a blue moon. The plastic (non PVC) curtains which I buy in Walmart for $8 get tossed out every 6 months. That beats the extra $1,000 for installing doors. I never have a problem with water getting on the floor. I simply have to make sure the plastic inner curtain is inside the base of the shower plate----just as I would have to make sure the shower doors were closed if I had doors. I can't stand shower doors. Mold builds up in the tracks or collects along the bottom even with frameless doors. Who wants to squeegee the glass doors and wipe them down on a regular basis? Not me-I often take 2 showers a day, especially in the summer....See Moredianechandler
