Cast Iron Shower receptors

Hi All,

I am wondering if anyone is using on of these shower bases? If so what kind of feed back do you have on it?

Its part of Kholers Iron/impressions.

We are getting ready to do 2 bathroom redos and the first will get a standard tub change over to a shower stall. We found this to be an afordable base option compaired to a tile mud job or some of the other otions out there.

We orignally planned to tile the shower floor but decided to look into a Kohler 36x48 cast iron receptor for our upcoming (sort of in-progress!) downstairs bath reno as a cost saving measure (we have two more baths to reno as well).

We ended up ordering the Kohler Archer acrylic one. The acrylic receptor was even cheaper (than the cast iron ones) and since it is for a downstairs bath that won't see much use anyway, it made sense to go with that.

Our salesperson convinced us to go this route, saying that with the glass shower doors and the tiled walls, it'll look great in addition to saving us a few bucks (and he does know his stuff!).

We have a Kohler cast iron receptor, but unfortunately, it is currently sitting in my garage awaiting installation sometime this week.

We played with it a little yesterday, and what I can tell you right off is that I think it will look great; it's definitely not slippery when wet (it has a pattern of rough rectangles all over the bottom; and it weighs a ton.

I'm laughing at the idea that a shower is going to last 40 years and not need a remodel. And I'm surprised to hear that cast iron would need to be refinished. Maybe I'm naive? Anyway - how high end is this remodel? I have Swanstone for going on 20 years and it has held up perfectly, but I really want to replace it with something less functional and more attractive. Mine is Almond Galaxy - not a solid, but it still looks like plastic. Not nearly as nice as the walls which have a matte finish (also still looking great). I can't comment on Silestone - I actually didn't know they made a shower pan. But I'll bet its expensive. Why not use tile?

Thanks! We are very happy with the way it turned out. We were walking that fine line between wanting the bathroom to look nice (opens to the FR) and not wanting to spend a fortune on a guest bathroom. The top edge of the "curb" (the curved part) is the pan, the front part is tile (cut pieces of the shower wall tile). mydreamhome, I use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the shower pan and on our Toto cast iron bathtubs when the no-slip grips start to look grungy. I had called Kohler about using it when we got the receptor and got their okay, and I think I did the same with Toto. Lysol Basin, Tub, and Tile cleaner (in the aerosol can) works pretty well, too for regular cleaning (I only use it in the tubs and the shower pan, not on the walls since we have natural stone border tile in all three bathrooms), but when the grips themselves are dirty, Magic Eraser does a better job (quicker and less elbow grease!).

Tile floors usually look beautiful. Tile will cost more $ than a cast iron shower receptor (pan). The labor to install the tile usually adds to the cost, It can be a PITA to keep clean from what I've heard/read, but for some it's worth the extra cost and work to get the look they want. We had a Kohler cast iron receptor installed when we reno'd our guest bathroom. Cost was a big factor as we were coming off our kitchen reno at the time, The bathroom is on the ground floor (on slab), and it is a guest bathroom after all, so we didn't want to put tons of $ into it (we still had to reno our two main floor bathrooms!). We wanted the bathroom to look really nice though, as it opens directly off our FR. We are very, very happy with the Kohler cast iron pan. It looks nice (the glossy white looks terrific with the glossy white shower wall tiles, and with the white toilet and sinktop). It is very sturdy and durable, and has no slip grips "baked" right into the finish (easily cleaned with a Magic Eraser if they start to look dingy--good as new!).

We chose cast iron tubs for our two main bathrooms, and a cast iron shower receptor (pan) for the guest bathroom. We did so for a few reasons; heat retention and solidity/sturdiness were the main ones. Our plumber used copper pipes for the water lines, but PVC drain pipes I believe. Those are definitely noisier (had we realized he was planning on using them, probably would have inquired about other options). Only noisy when draining (not horribly so). We shower in the tubs daily, and don't find them to be noisy for showering at all.

I love the looks of these and was sorely tempted but we ended up with an equally-or-more heavy terrazzo base. I hope Chewtoy will post pics when done so I can drool!

One thing to keep in mind is that the Kohler distributor said each cast iron base is made upon request -- so if that's still true, you need to allow a 4 - 6 week lead time.

Thanks for the feedback! I was shocked to see that the one we ordered is listed as 193 pounds. Its the Salient 30X60 with the right hand drain. This allows us to replace the tub and not have to modify the plumbing. I will need a body or two to help me set it in place.

We just finalized our tile for the shower today. We went with Ming green marble which will also go on the room floor(tumbled though). There will also be about 12 sqft of 4x12 glossy glass tile in two vertical bars in the shower.

I will document my before shots and progress through the project here. This is a very small 5 by 8 foot bathroom and we have a 2nd to do further down the road. I've done a little tile work and the other half and I will be doing most of the install, less plumbing for the new shower system.
