Bathroom exhaust vent placement

Hi, ๐Ÿ‘‹

My house is being renovated, with replacement bathroom exhaust fans. Much to my shock, I visited the house and see this big pipe sticking straight out of the side of it, where it can be viewed all the way down the street. I asked the contractor what was going on with that, and he says itโ€™s a vent for the bathroom fans. He further said, it was the right thing to do, as without it, my new fans wouldnโ€™t work properly, and that the house must not have had that before. I asked why the ones that are on the roof couldnโ€™t be used, since they had always worked just fine before. He said, maybe they are not any good, and that the best decision was right through my new siding. Is this standard?
