CT Frost Warning
Comments (33)Well, sorry. I have lived in Connecticut for over 12 years. I have many friend over there who do gardening. The expected spring frost date is mother's day for southern CT. It is usually better by the sound. But inland can get worse. So this should be no surprise. Here in GA, North Atlanta area we are expecting 41F tonight. Not quite near frost but very unseasonable. I have a suggestion for you to protect your plants: 1- If you have lots of leaves, pack around and over your plants and cover them with tarp or blankets etc. 2- In liue of leaves, get a lot of newspapers, separate them sheet by sheet and crumble them into fluffy balls and use them to pack around your plants,so that the air will be trapped and the weight of tarp will not damage the plants. Frost is not so bad. All you have to do is prevent cooling by radiation. But if you have freez, cold air will penetrate even through tarp and blanket. If you have just a few plants, you may cover them with empty pots. I would put a layer of newspaper inside them, for more protection....See MoreThe Northeast part of the U.S. has a frost/freeze warning tonight
Comments (2)Some of my trees got zapped, my Willow oak and Compton's oaks seemed to be affected the worst. They were downslope from the other oaks, though. My Durand oak was okay, although on low ground. My tender veggies got annihilated, but are easy to replace....See MoreFrost warning tonight in my area, will this kill plum flowers
Comments (11)I'm out close to okotoks. You guys have longer days up north hence warmer temps. We may get higher daytime highs but your nights could very well be warmer. I used to live in the arctic inuvik nwt only thing that grows up along that ocean is blue berry ,crab berry and strawberry. The days are very long from may to September .from June to August night doesn't exist. I think even just 4 hours north of me gets alot longer days by almost 1 hour I think . It was minus 3 last night I covered what was left of my apricots plums and cherries with garbage bags and they seemed to have done very well. I also misted all my plants and non were frost damaged....See MoreFrost Warning Tonight - October 19, 2014
Comments (1)Those geraniums look very grateful to have been rescued while they're still healthy. We have a Frost Advisory here on the Eastern Massachusetts coast, per the NWS: "A frost advisory is issued when frost is expected to develop during the growing season. Those with agricultural interests are advised to harvest or protect tender vegetation. Also...potted plants normally left outdoors should be covered or brought inside away from the cold." The last of my houseplants came in about a week ago so everything still out there is on its own. I did transplant some foxgloves and a mullein last week that had rooted themselves in a gravel path. I think they'll be OK. The bareroot Sanguinaria canadensis (single bloodroot) are safely underground - I'm hoping they'll naturalize. My bulb order from Brent and Becky's bulbs is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow so the timing should be good. Claire...See Morelindalana 5b Chicago
