Cercis occidentalis from seed collected today 2/14/24

Vacationing on the Trinity River near Willow Creek and there are a lot of Cercis occidentalis laden with seed pods, so I collected some. Anyone ever grow this from Seed? What are the chances of germination if I sow the seeds now in pots and place them outdoors? I would hope they germinate sometime in May when the temperatures are consistently above 70F where I garden in Oregon.

Here is what NARGS Germination guide says about Cercis canadensis, their list didn't include occidentalis.

Sow @ 20°C. Seed germinates within 3 months Requires scarification. Nick or rub between sheets of sandpaper. Requires soaking. Place in warm water until seeds swell, usually 24-48 hours. Discard water and any seeds that remain floating. * scarify very gently or will rot "

I finally got some more seed starting mix and planted 30 seeds in 6 pots. Just wanted to get it done since there are so many other gardening tasks right now, so no scarification or soaking. They'll sit outside in pots until they grow, or not.

I did this with seed from our locally native (Willamette Valley) Camassia (not sure which species, supposedly we have two here) last fall and they are all germinating right now(!) after spending the winter outside.

Now that I have learned to grow citrus with no problems I have 3 Poncirus trifoliata of grafting size and 4 sweetlee tangerine trees of vigor that will be graft-able next spring. That's 7 root-stocks that I can graft my twigs from the grafted tree I can purchase. My purchased tree will grow faster by waiting a year and will out grow anything I bought a year earlier. My decision is to not buy a grafted tree and to grow what I have. If it fruits, great If they don't. Well we'll see My from seed Nagami kumquat for grafting to poncirus trifoliata Seed grown Meiwa kumquat tree. The tree fruit I am interested in. To be grafted on to the poncirus trifoliata moots through the Nagami inter-stock. May also go directly to my sweetlee tangerine tree root-stock, Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #1 Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #2 Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #3 Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #4 Seed grown poncirus trifoliata to be grafted on Is posted above . Its in a blue 55 gallon half drum. This completes what I have done and what I have. Just checking back in for Scorp's email address, I got it bounced back. Gee, I was going to give her the benefit of the doubt and even emailed her saying it came across weird and sorry for the misunderstanding. I haven't heard back. But at least there are some people on the santa swap thread who do realize what a generous group there is here. Please don't let 1 person keep you from helping another. We have a common goal here, to give a grieving father something to smile for, even briefly, at the holidays. Unfortunately not good (Cercis). Several seeds had "floated" to the soil surface due to heavy spring rains. No evidence of germination, although they did at least appear to be viable. I'll leave them as they are until spring 2025.

Camassia have not continued to grow beyond about 1.5" in the pots, so I guess I'll plant them out, see what happens.
