What do you do when you're not livin' and breathin' roses...
Comments (13)So, Florence dear, did you go to the Mtns. ? If so, I hope you had lots of fun and are feeling refreshed. You know, I've been thinking about (and praying for) Robyn and I got to thinking, all this stress can't be good for her health. Perhaps she could get some relief from ordering one, or more, relaxing DVDs from WAVESDVD.COM. That is what I have done to try to ease this great big build-up of stress that I have been experiencing. Well, they came in the mail today, and I put one of the BEACHES DVDs into the dvd player, cuddled-up with my Winnie-the-Pooh bear, and Piglet, on the sofa under a comfy blanket and blessedly dropped off into a deep, much-needed sleep for hours. :) (You might really enjoy them, too.) You see, I have been under a lot of stress due to financial strain, and also due to having a local company squeeze in building a house 5 ft. from my property line in this formerly semi-rural neighborhood. The people who bought and live in that house are chronic noise-makers, doing their wild partying into the wee hours of the morning. Night after night, month after month of sleep deprivation is sooo very bad for my health--I have multiple sclerosis. You mentioned wanting to go to Tahiti, well, so do I!! to get away from them. Also, I am sick and tired of their garbage and beer cans ending up in my yard, and having some of the multitude of their fellow partiers parking in my driveway, on my lawn, or up next to the fence, gunning their loud engines and showing off to their friends how loud and noisy their SPECIAL mufflers are, and slamming their vehicle doors. Talking to them and calling the police (when they are keeping me up late) has done nothing to alleviate the problem. In my less charitable moments, which sad to say, have become more often, I think of them as "The Ugly Americans." :( Rude, obnoxious, inconsiderate people anyway... Comments (10)Hi Trailrunner, So much depends on the family that the roses come from. Some lose their leaves at the first sign of frost, some slowly over winter, and some hold on to them until spring. Also some types have leaves that turn color in the fall, others stay green. So they can be bright green and disappear, more will disappear on a windy day. I've never seen animals eating the leaves, and it doesn't matter if they did. Leaves have to go by spring anyway. Animals will eat the hips. Oh and rabbits will eat the stems in winter when food gets tough to find, so I assume chipmunks will too. Now that is bad! I gave up on trying to clean up leaves years ago. I have less of a BS problem now than I did then, lol. Remy...See MoreWhat do you all do with your rose books you want to either sell/give?
Comments (11)I put mine in monthly rose society raffles. Some rose societies also have a lending library. You can also give them to rose novices who still have that spark of all-things-roses excitement. Your generosity can mean a great deal to the person just getting into rose growing. I still wish all these rose pictures had a scratch & sniff feature....See MoreWhen you talk to your roses, what do you say?
Comments (29)Thanks for all the inspirations, guys! JoeMoose - you're so polite to your roses, maybe I should try asking them nicely to put out some more blooms when I deadhead and see if they listen. Kittymoonbeam, I think your roses are chiming in with you in a croaking "water, water!!" voice - I pity you out in CA. Countrygirl - I can relate to the guilt trips for our roses - if we put all that work into them they need to shape up after all! Beth - that's the perfect guilt trip in fact - don't bite the hand that feeds you/deadheads you/ waters you. "I've missed you" - ah, what a nice sentiment KentuckyRose and it definitely expresses the nice side of "well, FINALLY...". Rosecandy - I've definitely begged my roses to survive and gotten more desperate as they dwindle over time, and I talk to my resident rabbits all the time (including a baby one we've named Norbert) to stay away from my roses (but he just looks at me smugly and keeps eating). Patty - I'm not letting myself think that I might jinx the roses - if the best fertilizer is the gardener's footsteps, I'm thinking that talking has to count for something too. Jim - of course, the sad second part to that one is "Don't die on me buckaroo!" Msdorkgirl - I had to laugh at the last one. I keep asking Fimbriata every year why it won't just die and put us all out of our miseries, but even though it's horribly chlorotic at the moment, it's also totally winter hardy and I just can't kill a survivor like that without just cause. Holly - you've captured the surprise of rose growing well - "what on earth is that" or "where did that come from" - when you check your roses every day or so it's still amazing to see how easy it is to be surprised. Unfortunately, I'm often surprised by "where did that go" with the bloom that just opened yesterday and is already wilted and fading today. Cynthia...See MoreLilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca
