Good point about the germs and the doorknob! Thanks for the thought. As an explanation, we are considering the door because, practically, I have a feeling the door between the closet and the bathroom will get left open frequently. But maybe if it's in its nook, outside of the door's sightline, that's enough to prevent unpleasant surprises... And I totally agree on entering the closet from the bathroom--that layout never appealed to me. In that case, a toilet room would be non-negotiable. The other thing about having the toilet on the left is that if we do change our mind about entering from the closet at the same time that we win the lottery, we can put a door straight in from the bedroom without worrying about the bathroom & toilet door colliding.

In my previous house I piled the backup TP rolls in an antique stoneware chamberpot. :-) (Now it holds magazines for me to read in the bathtub.) If you can cut into your wall, check out this recessed TP storage cabinet that fits right between the studs. I think it holds two rolls. Paint it to match the wall, or tart it up and make it cute, whatever you want to do. If you need to store more TP, get the recessed plunger cabinet and ask them to leave the plunger and tray out of the order (they're nice about customizing); if I figure right you should be able to store an entire 8-pack in there! Or you could get REALLY "Colonial" and go right for the outhouse... spiders, snakes and wasps thankfully not included!

@enjoythejounrey, Thanks for the feedback :) I like floor-to-ceiling tile everywhere but the person at the tile store recommended against it (since there would be no space for me to add colour with paint and she thought it would look too commercial). I was considering some walls that are half-tiled for cleanliness purposes around the toilet -- I just like that I'd be able to wet it down and clean it as needed. You'd be surprised by the poor aim of some males :P Ideally, I'd also like tile behind any wall where there's a towel hanging too (since people with wet hands splash the walls when grabbing for a towel and it drives me nuts :P). I haven't really figured out where I could put towel hooks in my Main Bath yet, but the towel hooks in the ensuite will be on the tiled wall beside the toilet (kind of in the shower area but far enough back that it shouldn't get wet). I actually like the contrast of the white toilet with the grey wall (especially since I'll be doing a wall-mounted toilet which will also have a pretty large metal actuator plate). FYI, the toilet is only tucked in an alcove in the Main Bath. The Main Bath has a window in the room, it's just that the window isn't directly above the toilet. I'm toying with the idea of installing a gloss-white cabinet above the Main Bath toilet (shown in the drawing) that would be flush with the wall (and I think this would brighten up the space a little). If I don't do the white cabinet, then I will prbably have a towel-storage rack above the toilet (which could add some colour). I'm hoping that it won't look too dark looking in the Mian Bath toilet area. The ensuite (where the toilet is more in the open) doesn't have a window but will have a SolaTube light tunnel to bring in light. Thanks!

Thanks for feedback- we have a tub in the guest bath on current main level. For the pop-up we can put a tub in the kids shared bath. They are getting to an age where they probably like standup shower like our current 3x5 but can do combo for family bath on resale if that is better for families to bathe younger kiddos down the road. I think it is a 50/50 mix in our area (NoVA/DC metro). The really small remodeled homes don't have them. The ones we may 'compete' against would be new builds which are larger square footage. So if no tub (which we are fine with) is to find a design for a really nice shower but feel airy and spacious in the room. If we go no tub, should we reduce space and widen walk in closet or do something with laundry closet? Or just make shower a little bigger - if shower at entrance would that be a wall or just go with frosted glass? Our master bath had entrance adjusted so DH could get his 'sitting space' and place a TV or something on a wall there (also to avoid door to door direct line Feng shui with opposite bedroom. Current laundry is in basement so we thought we should at least have a mini w/d upstairs. We are blowing out some walls on main level so don't want to lose storage space on main to place laundry there as a compromise option that had come up.
