How do you know what kind of shade you have?By tree type soil etc
Comments (3)What else... Rainfall. How much over the whole of the year, and when in the year. How much mist? How high are you above sea level? Does your property face the sun (South, for you) or are you shaded by hills, buildings, whatever, and don't see the sun until later in the day? Does the frost take it's time about melting, even when it's sunny? When is your first/last frost of significance (the one that terminates the tomatoes or mushies the young bean plants)? Is your soil acid, or alkaline or neutral? 6,5,4 is tending acid. 8,9 is tending alkaline. 6.5-7.5 is around the neutral range. You can buy a home test kit from your garden centre or farmers' supply depot. With maples and cherries, I'd guess at moderately acid - especially if you have pines and native rhododendrons in your woods/bush. How deep is the topsoil, and does it dry out over the summer? Do you have boggy patches in the woods, or is it mostly well-drained after the heavy rains? How dense are the roots in the area where you might want to have planting pockets for treasures? And what sort of shade??? Do the trees cast shadows sprinkled with patches of light on a sunny day? (Dappled light.) Or does it look as gloomy as a winter day when you go in on a summer's day? (Dense shade) Dry shade is the sort of thing you get on the north side of the house under the eaves. Rarely gets natural moisture. A useful zone for drying out bulbs over summer, but can be a gardening challenge. Hope that's helped a bit....See MoreWhat type of morning glory do you think I may have?
Comments (1)It sure sounds like Ipomoea hederacea...as soon as you can post a photo you will get a more specific answer...if what is growing there is some type of morning glory...all MG's belong to some species whether they are a totally natural strain or a 'highly bred' cultivar of some species...despite widespread misconceptions there are extremely few true inter-specific hybrids of MG's out there anywhere... Here is the google image link for Ipomoea hederacea... if you can locate a photo on the web that looks like what you have it might help but without a photo reference we will likely be playing guessing games... regards, Ron Here is a link that might be useful: Ipomoea hederacea images googled...See MoreWhat type of light do you have above your kitchen sink?
Comments (8)If you're worried about yanking out the valance, just get a new fluorescent fixture. My old kitchen had one of those with the plastic sheet over a very retro tube and it was nasty yellow but otherwise a great fixture. New diffuser and new bulbs (and maybe new fixture to get modern fluorescent bulbs) can make a big difference. It's actually a pretty good system as far as useful lighting goes, although there is no decorative element involved. I skipped the valance after the remodel and put in a surface mount can sort of fixture (still fluorescent); in a more traditional kitchen I would have (and have) done a pendant because they're fun. You can pretty much put in anything with good lighting that won't hang low enough to bonk your noggin. Get something that makes you smile. With good output....See MoreWhat type of flooring do you have in your livingroom?
Comments (58)Someone asked about hardwood being laid at an angle. Hubby did that in our library. We also added a border all in the same wood in the ladies parlor. This next photo was taken from the ladies parlor looking into the library. And this is my wonderful hubby installing the floor in the gentlemen's parlor. The pictures too small to see the border around the hearth. And here's the sunroom. It opens up to the Gentlemen's parlor, the floors go at right angles to each other, but I don't have a photo of that online. Our upstairs hallway is in the same wood as the floors above. It has a turn in it. I thought the each end of the hallway should have the floors going lengthwise so I asked if he could try to do log cabin (as in the quilt) corners. And he did. I'll try to take a photo tomorrow, but right now our grandson is asleep in the room that opens from the corner of the hallway....See Morealwaysdesigning
