Custom Wood Hood Owners- Need Input on Measurements, Please!!!
Comments (5)Someone on gardenweb (about six years ago, last kitchen) told me that the bottom of the hood should either start just below your eyes, or an inch or two above your head. I believe the person said this should definitely be for the primary user, but also to take into account other users' heights. I finally realized this was because if it is above your eyes, but below the top of your head, you are not going to see it and thus are going to bump your head on it. I complied exactly with these instructions, putting the bottom of it a couple inches above my and DH's height (which are similar) and no one ever bumped their head, and it was perfect. I think it would make me feel claustrophobic to have the bottom of it start just below my eyes -- like it's in my way......See MoreBamboo shade or plantation shutter owners, please give input
Comments (18)Sorry for letting this thread drop, we had to make a bit of an emergency trip out of state. I don't want any of you who responded to think that I just didn't read through your responses. :) I'm not sure why the lined bamboo shades would be so heavy (I've not felt them myself, but the rep said they'd be "ugodly heavy." We have babmoo shades outside and they're surprisingly light. Maybe a different quality of materials is used? I'm really not sure. The existing panels & sheers, once we have a privacy treatment, would stay open - pushed to either side (not swagged). The panels & sheers are on a double rod and I like to have the sheers just barely poking out from behind. No idea why, it's just a look I really like. I'm not deeply in love with either, but it took me a LONG time to find panels in that color that were long enough so I'm not in a hurry to get rid of them. I don't have a great pic showing the windows/current treatments, and never did get one taken before we had to take off. Here are some that I've taken to show other things, in which you can see partially what I have: These are the actual windows: You can see part of the panels/sheers here. The sheers can go if need be. There's just something I like about them paired. This is a very rare picture of them closed. We normally leave them pulled open. The panels aren't quite that dark, nor shiny, in person (and we now have a different rug in there)....See MoreHas anyone tried spanish gold marble for kitchen counter?

Comments (13)Quick summary: I love my marble. If I could have fallen in love with some other material (still affordable) that requires less babying/maintenance, then I would have jumped on it. These years of waiting for patina is not fun nor easy. Just know that lots of things can happen, and may happen... --- Have you read my many posts with real feedback regarding my marble trial and tribulations? Amanda's thread crying about a marble stain, which has faded I truly wanted stainless steel countertop and integrated backsplash and sink, but DH wouldn't go for it. He thinks it looks too commercial, like a school cafeteria. I think I'm realistic, knowing how untidy and abusive cooks that we are. Like right now, my entire countertop is covered w/ stuff: - composter - meat defrosting/soaking in bowl - trivet/baking sheet from last night's dinner - big old bowl of fruit, w/ the plantains begging to be cooked - crockpot base that didn't get put away - aluminum foil and saran wrap from making/packing this morning's lunches Gone are the first 1.5years of feverishly clearing off my countertop, making sure there's no drip that could stain or etch, etc. -- I don't like grout/seams, so we had to get the marble slab. We already had chosen marble for the countertop, so I couldn't go with another material for backsplash. --- Good: - a backsplash is not as large real estate as countertop, so less impact/etching/potential stains/chips - not in direct light, but you may have lighting from the hood and under cabinet lighting "marble pictures that make my heart sing" - like I said, just be prepared for what may happen... -- Good luck, Amanda...See MoreAmerican Granite Company
