Thicker counter on island than the perimeter?

Our island turned out amazing with a quartzite with a crazy pattern and this counter is 1.5" thick with a built up eased edge. I am still trying to decide the perimeter counter details however. We settled on a quartzite that is much simpler for the other perimeter counters, so it does not take attention away from the island and make the room too busy. When I use test pieces with the same thickness as the island, it looks a bit beefy, as if it's trying to show-off as well. So now I am wondering if a single slab layer for the perimeter - the more contemporary Euro style with no subtop might look better around the perimeter. That way the island would look thicker and beefy and the perimeter would look like a streamlined work surface. I've seen a few pics on Houzz where this looks nice. Is this a common design solution? Any reason I'd want to avoid a single 3/4" slab layer around the perimeter counters?
