What do you know about scaling/root planing?

last month

I go to the dentist every 6 months for a cleaning. At home I use my Braun electric toothbrush at least twice a day, sometimes more. I also floss and use a waterpik.

I have 2 missing teeth that nobody would notice unless I gave them a HUGE fake smile (which I’m not prone to do). One was removed by a dentist 52 years ago. The other needed to be removed in 2020 at the height of COVID. I refused to go anywhere close to someone else’s face at that time, so I removed it myself.

At my last cleaning a couple of weeks ago, my dentist said he was concerned about another tooth at the very back of my mouth. He thought it might be a bone issue and referred me to a periodontist. The periodontist was more concerned about doing a scaling and root planing and removing that back tooth.

I’ve been reading about scaling and planing and know a couple of people who say they’ve lost teeth due to the procedure.

Have any of you had this done and do you have anything to say about it?
