He passed away at age 100. He was certainly the most influential man in the world for over 18 years.

I remember reading an article of his when I was 13.

I remember meeting him at several events I attended.

I remember his integrity when admitting he was wrong after the financial crisis.

I remember how he had a bad back and did a lot of work soaking in a hot bath.

I remember him saying that when he was consulting, he'd hire women economists as they were just as good but he didn't have to pay them as much...

I remember Hillary being asked what it was like to be married to the most powerful man in the world, and she replied, "I don't know. You'd have to ask Andrea Mitchell."

If your goal in life is to make a difference, he certainly succeeded.

In the early 2000’s when his reputation was positive and strong, a student at UVA, Erin Crowe, painted a series of Greenspan portraits. They hung in my cafe for awhile— I had an econ degree and was a fan.

Wow, Annie, how fortunate you were to have known him. I was not aware of most things financial for many years so I knew his name but that is about it. I love Hillary's reply and even though the remark about Greenspan not having to pay women as much, I suspect he had great respect for their acumen and contributions. I am amazed he lived that long of and I hope a happy life.

lisaam, that is a neat connection to him as well. Are the portraits still around somewhere?

Keith Waterhouse went only a few months ago and now Sillitoe. Sad. He was amazing - to break out and become a writer from a background like that! And, as Vee says, he wasn't a Grammar school boy. The handle 'Angry Young Men', however, is a strange one. Osborne's Jimmy Porter was the original, of course, and he certainly was very angry - mostly for little reason, to my mind. And I suppose Arthur Seaton was quite angry. But Barstow's Vic Brown from 'A Kind of Loving' wasn't; nor was Waterhouse's Billy Liar; nor Joe Lampton from Braine's 'Room at the Top' (I can't remember about David Storey's 'This Sporting Life' ). Mostly they were, though, working class and of their time: the rebellion and breaking-out of the young in post-war Britai which was restrictive and constrictive in most ways.

I have been enjoying the latest season of "Inspector Lewis" on our U.S. PBS television - of course we are very much behind the U.K., who saw these programs at least a year, maybe two years ago. I actually watch them on my computer as I don't have a TV, and I have been looking forward to each one becoming available at midnight on Sunday. I have seen Mr. Plater's name pop up at the beginning of some of these shows, and I know I am in for a treat. The subtle witty dialogue really raises the show above normal television fare, and I usually watch each one at least twice. I am sorry there will be no more, but I am glad that we have what we do.

Thank you, all my friends, for your kind thoughts and wishes. Yes, Judy, both being writers did bring us closer together. We actually collaborated on a 4-part TV script; and I dramatised several of his novels for BBC radio (A Raging Calm, Joby, A Kind of Loving). I'm going to do more of them. Being writers, we each understood the process that the other was going through - 'Don't talk, I'm working in my head' was frequently heard, and neither of us would disturb the other. Result was, we spent our days separate and in companionable silence but came together for an early-evening drink in the pub, supper and a chat or catching up on TV.
