foas - you’re East Coast, yes? From West Coast, I know I’ve heard the term ’starters’ for a first course in a more formal dinner or even listed that way on menus. But, apps, the more casual word, is what first comes to mind for me. We definitely say four-uh-ners. A very different sound for the ’IN’ part of inners. My birthplace is MT & I spent adolescence & teen years in AK so I don’t think I have a typical regional accent or speech pattern. A person once told me I sounded like I came from NY. Didn’t say which part but I think that’s the MT influence.

KW, my husband has pretty much every book written by Wodehouse. Almost one hundred, I think. I’d have to go count. He’s been collecting them his whole life. I’ve read most of them, and that phrase just stood out in my mind. I scanned the stories about Lord Emsworth as I felt that would be the perfect spot to use that phrase. There it was. Husband’s messy den.🤠

It was quite a stretch for that "g" to cover the whole space between those distant ends ... to make them "tight" - at a neighbourhood pub, maybe? Several of my rather ancient undies have become so out of touch with this attribute of their youthful activities that unless I add some extra stretch, their sideways ends have grown so distant that they drop down further than their middle, that gets hung up on the crotch of my pants- (when I'm wearing them). ole joyful
