Alafalfa pellets. Anyone use em? How do you use em?
Comments (18)I remember finding a recipe on rose forum...Lets me see if I can find it now.. Here is one post I kept: Angela, I do what Pete does, just put a cup or so of alfalfa pellets under the mulch and close in to the base of the plant, and then soak with a little water. But, to get to your question, a good recipe to start off with is probably the original recipe for alfalfa tea, as described by Howard Walters, the Rosarian Rambler, in an ARS article: "Alfalfa tea is a great spring or fall potion that doesn't interfere with normal seasonal processes. Alfalfa tea releases a growth hormone that makes everything work better. Just add 10 to 12 cups of alfalfa meal or pellets to a 32-gallon plastic garbage can (with a lid), add water, stir and steep for four or five days, stirring occasionally. You may also "fortify" with 2 cups of Epsom salts, 1/2 cup of Sequestrene® (chelated iron, now called Sprint 330) or your favorite trace element elixir. The tea will start to smell in about three days. Keep the lid ON. Use about a gallon of mix on large rose bushes, 1/3 that much on mini's. And keep the water going. When you get to the bottom of the barrel, add water to fill it up again! One load of meal or pellets will brew up two barrels full, but add more fortifiers for the second barrel. You'll see greener growth and stronger stems within a week." I stir the "witch brew" almost every day...Keep it or 3-7 days, and then water everything with it- other plants besides roses will appreciate the "potion". Gardeners from upnorth recommend using it a few times a year, but I use it here a lot more often. I like to put a trashcan out in the rain, so it gets filled up. Then, add the pellets and wait for it to brew. Hope it helps :) Olya...See MoreHow do you 'work' in the garden? Do you use a potting bench?
Comments (21)Dee, I like your idea of putting all the small tools in a five gallon bucket and bringing it with you. I think I am going to try my version of that with a two wheeler and a small beach umbrella. I like bringing shade with me and having a two wheeler to move something if I need it. I also have a way of using the 5 gallon bucket as a work surface while sitting on a riding seat. I had fun putting the whole thing together too. Had lots of places to put things like my water bottle, etc. I did that two summers ago and I forget what happened that I didn't last year. I could move into one of those sheds tomorrow too Dee. Might make a nice get away, right in the backyard. Bring out a cooler and a comfortable chair, a few gardening magazines...make a day of it. :-) Linda, the umbrella is a nice idea when you have to use a space that is too sunny and it helps when it rains to keep things dry if you haven't got any cover. I also made a decision to try using the garage for one season and clear out an area that would be the same size as a small shed and see how it works before I commit to having a shed. sooey, you sound pretty organized to me! pm2...See MoreA question about using saffron...
Comments (11)Alexa, here is the recipe briefly: Swedish Cardamom Coffee Bread 3-4 c bread flour (I used a-p flour) 3/4 c sugar 1 Tbs cardamom 1 tsp salt 1 Tbs yeast 3/4 c boiled milk + 1/4 c warm water pinch of saffron for color 1 egg, beaten 2 Tbs butter, softened Mix dry ingredients is bowl. Steep saffron in hot milk in large bowl. Mix yeast into the 1/4 cup warm water. Add dry ingredients into the hot milk and mix well. Let cool to lukewarm and then add in the yeast/water mixture. Stir in beaten egg and softened butter. Mix well, then turn out and knead on a floured surface 8-10 minutes to make a soft dough. Put into a greased bowl and let rise, covered, for 1 hour. Punch down turn out and knead briefly. To make a large braid, divide dough into 3 portions, roll each into a long rope and braid the 3 ropes to make a braided loaf. To make two smaller braids, divide dough into two portions, then divide each portion into 3 ropes and braid for two loaves. Let formed braids rise on a greased or parchment paper cover baking sheet for 45 minutes. Bake at 375F for 25-30 minutes. Brush with melted butter (or milk) and sprinkle with sugar (I used cinnamon sugar) right out of the oven. Cool on a wire rack until completely cooled before slicing. This turned out a little golden in color for me, but the taste and texture is wonderful! I will make this again! Teresa...See MoreDo you have a screened porch, and how often do you use it?
Comments (12)I'm in New England -- in wooded hillside with nearby streams and ponds. After dusk, the mosquitoes get wild. I don't have a screened in porch but wish I did. I would sleep there and listen to whippoorwills and frogs and later in the summer I'd enjoy the crickets. I'd breath in the fragrance of the grass and woodlands a d pond. At dawn and dusk, I'd swoon over theusical flute like call of the wood thrush. For old time sake, I'd light a kerosene or Coleman lantern and playing cards or an attic fragrant board game. No screen porch, but large windows with screen in a woodland home. If you are lucky enough to have a screened in porch (floor too), count yourself lucky and enjoy every second on it. Breath deeply. Totally relax....See More- last month
