Skating into February......Idyll #470
Comments (100)We are all thinking of Haiti still, and some of us have mentioned even going there. This note arrived in my mail from DS this morning: .................................. By Carmina, one of many Haitian-American bloggers/entrepreneurs/educators/open sourcerers I met in NYC Saturday, willing to Take a Stand for Haiti: Laptops?!? My good friend Mike asked puzzled. And I understood his reaction because I had the same one at first. Haiti s children dont need laptops; they need food, shelter, the basic stuff Im grateful that others have the skills and the opportunity to go to Haiti and help with those basic needs. I applaud their efforts and admire their courage: unfortunately, I dont have the skills or opportunity to do so myself. Almost a month has passed alreadyIts time to build Haiti back! Its not going to happen overnight and its not going to happen by itself. Its starts with everyone doing a little bit, where they are, when they can. So Im doing the little bit I can by actively supporting 2 organizations whose mission I believe in. What motivates and excites me about the One Laptop Per Child / Waveplace project is its potential to impact the next generation of Haitians, out of which future parents, citizens, mayors, senators and even presidents will come from. I see a potential to open the minds of our children to other realities, other worlds, give them new dreams, broader horizons. So last Saturday at a CrisisCamp in NYC, when I heard Adam Holt and Allison Bland, exhausted from an early morning train ride from Boston to NY talked enthusiastically about this project I saw a chance to make a difference. No matter how small my part would be. Then I witnessed something awesome: people were gathering around them, coming together, rallying around this project. The ideas started flowing, out of the box ideas. Suddenly, a simple translation project request became a movement to revolutionize the educational system in Haiti. 2 days later, we have a coloring book project under way, translation parties in the works, blogs, websites, publishers/authors willing to giving us permission to make their children Creole books into e-books, an active and growing online community of a people exchanging ideas and ready to make a difference in anyway they can. Wow! If we can do that in 2 days, what can we do in 1 week, 1 month, 1 year! Yes, I realize that its a drop in the ocean, but if you could even indirectly impact the future of 1 child of Haiti, would it not have been worth your while? You can help! Join our community at The New Haiti Project. Donate 1 hour of your time to translate material from English to Creole. (Spanish, French, Portuguese and other languages are useful too.) Comments (6)Hi Julie, the task force website is very informative. I still wasn't sure if it was spring sickness or bugs. After reading that it seems it could go hand in hand. Upon further inspection I found a spider web at the base of that fan. Wonder if he set up camp there for a reason? In that link it seems that it starts as a fungal which leaves an opening for mites to enter. Not sure if spiders eat mites, but whatever he is eating he can call it home for as long as he likes. I've had a few others but they outgrew it MUCH quicker than this one. I wonder if it isn't caused by digging & dividing which allows a fungus to enter. They say it isn't as prevalent in the south & although they have tried to come to a conclusion on spraying for rust to see if that was a factor & apparently still spring sickness. BUT the folks I purchased plants from down there did a fungal soak before shipping them to me. Dakar I bought in the north where rust isn't an issue & know they wouldn't have soaked it in a fungicide. Since I've never dealt with rust I can't say whether the fungicide is used a systemic or not or if it could actually penetrate to the core of the crown. I kept records of where I got all my dls & will check when it gets light out to see which ones got it & where I got it from. I think the weirdest part about spring sickness is that it happens in sporadic years on the same plant. Now for those proliferations! I am so excited to try this & apparently both techniques work. From the AHS website you can link off to a Lee Pickles article describing both methods. Since I have 2 plants like the 1st pic, I will try 1 on the scape & 1 in water. Thanks for your help!...See MoreBackyard Skating Rinks?
Comments (23)The funny thing is - when I look at the house foundation - how much foundations is exposed between ground and bottom of brick siding - it all looks even to me. There is no way there is a 6" or more difference between the 2 ends of the house. So it still really surprises me that our yard is so unlevel. When it rains, we never notice precipitation draining towards our driveway. Not sure if we are going to try again this year. The whole thing is covered with snow right now. We never took it apart - I just drained it before we got that storm. So to start over we would need to first disassemble what we have. We originally installed it shortly after Thanksgiving. On a relatively nice day. But we didn't lay out the tarp then - I was concerned about potential branches falling. Or neighborhood dogs running through it. And if you get a hole in your tarp, the tarp is useless. And we didn't level it then. Since we weren't sure where the frame would need to be leveled. And we have no means of checking the leveling over the 34 foot span. (And in hindsight, I would have leveled the wrong places!) The manufacturers instructions say to wait until you are filling the rink to lay the tarp, and they say to level it as you fill it. I just never dreamed that our front yard was on such a slope. We own the rink now. In huge letters all over the box there are huge caution signs saying that you cannot return the tarp after you open it. So make sure your yard is level before you open the tarp. And I'm reading it saying Duh, how does someone not know if their yard is level or not. So I guess I'm that huge Duh! My daughter is a skater, so I justified the purchase of this rink by telling myself that I wouldn't have to pay for practice ice time over the winter months. But instead I just bought ice time for January and February. The world is full of good intentions....See MoreAny IMUS fans here?
Comments (17)Socks 12345, KRLA 870 (in Glendale) has a pretty good lineup, if you like John and Ken and people similar to them. Kevin James is on from 9 to 11 pm. Mike Gallagher is on from 1 to 3am. They may have informercials from 3am on. The signal isn't strong, but if you can't pick it up on the radio, you can listen live on the internet. I don't listen to the 'alien' show either. Not my style. Linda I used to see Imus on MSNBC (More Stuff NoBody Cares about, lol) once in awhile, extra early in the morning. No big fan of his but think he got overly punished for a bone headed comment, considering what the people who called for it get away with. I think most people outside of his listening area didn't know he existed until the controversy. He seems very successful, and does a lot of good works.
