Sarah! Your birthday cake is done!
Comments (3)OMG! I've been too busy lately! It's wonderful Mary, thank you sooo much! ON my birthday I had a great steak off the grill and a bottle of wine by the pond with 2 good friends. FOR my birthday I treated myself to a road trip to the 3rd Annual Junk Bonanza. The biggest Flea Market in the mid-west. 120 juried junk dealers, $6 to get in, held at Canterbury Downs Racetrack. 3 buildings of GOOD JUNK, antiques, etc!! It was fabulous :o) The two of us only filled the pick up 1/3 full, so we had to stop at Crafts Direct in St Cloud on the way home. And then we ate at 5 Guys - they just opened in MN. Great burgers - fantastic fries...great belated birthday trip! Thanks again gang, Sarah...See MoreWhat has been your favorite Birthday gift - cooking or food relat
Comments (26)This is a totally different idea, but I wanted to mention it because I recently rediscovered my immersion blender. I wanted something I could take out of town with me that was small and easy to pack, and...I know this would sound odd to some...offered a little bit of ''help'' in case I decided I wanted to bake. (A readily-available kitchen is a good thing.) Anyway, I realized my immersion blender (Kitchen Aid) had a whip attachment (like a miniature hand-mixer) that I'd never used. Eureka! Of course I had to try it out, and it works beautifully. If your friend doesn't have one, she would probably love it for blending soups, making smoothies or chopping things. The best part is they're not terrible expensive. (FYI; maybe not for now, but for the future.)...See MoreBirthday Roses! What to buy...vote for your favorites
Comments (18)Happy Belated Birthday! If you have limited space, I cannot recommend Brother Cadfael. He throws out huge canes. I now have one that is about 6 feet tall. For some reason this year he had just gotten bigger than ever. That is with severe pruning. He mostly stands about 5 feet tall. Good first bloom then sporadic afterwards. He doesn't like the heat and will bloom when it cools down. Scent to die for! Not great as a cut flower. I adore this rose and will never be without it. Here he is as a baby plant. He is very easy to start on his own root. Which is what this picture shows. Here is a more established version that I cut back to about 2 feet in January. This is his picture in May. Those rungs are 4 inches apart and the arbor starts at about 6 inches off the ground. You can barely make out the first rung. Sharifa Asma. Love that rose. Gets to be about 3--4 feet by 3--4 feet. Great first blush. Spotty afterwards. Poor rebloom until it cools down again. Scent to die for. Gorgeous blooms. Love that rose but she got the shovel prune this year. I miss her terribly. If you want a pink with beautiful cupped blooms that stays relatively "small" for an Austin in an area that has warm summers, I would recommend Pretty Jessica. She gets to be about 5 feet tall and is not very wide. Blooms well in the heat. Great rose....See MoreYour favorite cake for Christmas dessert?
Comments (25)another good cake that you make a few days before Christmas is the Bacardi recipe for rum cake. 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts 1 18 1/2 oz. package yellow cake mix 1 3 3/4 oz. pkg. Jell-O Vanilla Instant Pudding and Pie filling. (Even if pudding is already in the cake mix.) 4 eggs 1/2 cup cold water 1/2 cup Wesson oil 1/2 cup Bacardi dark rum GLAZE: 1/4 pound butter(cube) 1/4 cup water 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup Bacardi dark rum Directions Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease and flour a 10 inch tube pan, or 12 cup Bundt pan. Sprinkle nuts over bottom of pan. Mix all cake ingredients together. Pour batter over nuts. Bake 1 hour. Cool. Invert cake onto a serving plate. FOR GLAZE: melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in the water and sugar. Boil five minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in the rum. Prick all over the top of the cake. Drizzle and smooth glaze evenly over top and sides. Allow the cake to absorb the glaze completely. Repeat until glaze is used up. Have waxed paper underneath and continue to scoop up the glaze and add it until the cake is saturated. This is a rich, moist cake. A dollop of whipped cream can be added for a special touch....See More- last monthlast modified: last month
