8 weeks in the hospital

It started on October 3. One day I was playing Scrabble with friends at the library, and the next I was in the emergency room--the first of several visits and admissions. Two hospitals and a rehab hospital (in and out). A heart catheterization (arteries were clear), 3 CT scans, 2 cardiac ultrasounds, 3 procedures to remove a total of 2.5 liters of fluid from my chest (big needle through my ribs), a partly collapsed lung as the result of one of them, and innumerable chest x-rays, blood draws, etc.

All because of two viruses (noro and astro) that caused various problems, including pericarditis and pneumonia. The pericarditis has given me the most trouble, and it's still hanging on. For the first time in my life, I'm now taking regular meds--four of them. The cost for this month was $583.

I'm home, finally, and my daughter brought my dog back to me this morning. But I'm weak and wobbly, walking gingerly and hunched over with a cane or walker. My distance vision has been affected, as well as my sense of taste, and my scoliosis is much worse. The many nights in the hospital have conditioned me to wake in the middle of the night and stay awake. I've lost 15 pounds that I didn't want to lose. Lasix has removed every drop of moisture from me, and I look like a mummy. But the bottom line is I'm happy to be home, and I just hope we can keep the chest fluid from building up again.

I have a doctor's appointment today, and that will be an adventure as the county's transportation service for seniors is taking me. A new experience. I'll have physical therapy at the house, and a visiting nurse.

So that’s my story. How’s everyone else doing?
