CBS news / weather is talking about Melissa now. Catastrophic for Jamaica / Bahamas 130 mph winds. On this coast & in PNW we are currently experiencing another ”atmospheric river” which means the torrential rainfall & high winds I’m seeing right now. A real gully washer. Snow in mountains & this storm will push all the way to Montana Rocky Mountains.

Good luck. That's one kind of extreme weather that we seem to be getting more of too. I don't like rainy days much to begin with but when rainy weather comes with high winds and strong downpours, with all the damage that can cause, it's even worse.

I saw where they are expecting up to 60” of rain in the mountains and up to 30” of rain at the coasts of Jamaica. Catastrophic flooding and mudslides are guaranteed. :(

The hurricane looks like it is going to be devastating. I hope that the forecast is less damaging than expected.

KW PNW - we're getting the same atmospheric river weather event as you and right now it is windy and raining.

Looks calm out there now in my corner of the PNW but, what a mess in our back yard from the neighboring towering Doug Firs! A mess of needles, cones & small branches. I’ll get my exercise in today between the showers in forecast. I love my cordless blower for this job - we have @ 1,100 square ft of paver patio which is easy to clean off.

With very fortunate timing, I just had 4 of my 6 downspouts cleared. It was a big job, as they had been sadly neglected for years. (One had a little tree growing inside.) The fellow who did the work was excellent, and did a good job. One required a french barrel type of solution. Another one needed a sizable trench dug. Im so glad it's done.

I just took a look at updated reports. The forecasters expect winds in excess of 150 mph and rainfall of 40 inches or more in some areas. I hope as sometimes happens that the forecasts are worst case and pessimistic and that the ultimate outcomes will be less severe.

A friend has a trip booked to Jamaica in the middle of November. Luckily they bought travel insurance.

Forecasters are saying that Melissa will most likely be the worst hurricane to ever hit Jamaica in recorded history. Major flooding is already occurring, and the storm won't even directly hit the coast until early Tues morning. The US got lucky this year, hope this signals the end of the 2025 hurricane season.

And the world is doing *what* about increasingly severe weather patterns?

I've been following a couple of meteorologists that are covering Melissa and it sure looks to be devastating. There are lots of Americans are currently there on vacation. We've known this hurricane has been coming for a while and they still went. Mind boggling.

Yeah, back to the real story. It's a frightening situation. Maybe it'll weaken and the severity could be reduced? Wishful thinking.

Those poor people. I can't even imagine.

BBC news reported that the reason that Melissa is expected to be so huge is that we are now getting close to the end of this year's hurricane season, and there have been no previous storms in the Caribbean that could have cooled the water there, and therefore the Caribbean is quite a bit hotter than usual - thus the storm can be more powerful.

Forty inches of rain will be catastrophic, and although it was reported that people have been told to evacuate, they did not say where they were supposed to evacuate to.

Is there any high ground in Jamaica? There is a substantial Jamaican community in the Boston area and they are preparing food and aid packages. What a helpless feeling.

Jamaica has coffee called Blue Mountain. I found this about it…….

To be labeled Jamaica Blue Mountain, the coffee must be grown in certain areas--Saint Mary, Saint Thomas, Saint Andrew, and Portland. The coffee must be grown between elevations of 3,000 and 5,500 feet. Coffee grown between 1,500 and 3,000 feet is considered Jamaica High Mountain while coffee grown below 1,500 feet is Jamaica Low Mountain or Jamaica Supreme.

Turks & Caicos has warnings too. I've been there during a hurricane....the boat captain hid us behind a reef....we got high winds and rain. Nothing too ominous, back then. Fingers crossed it's THAT mild THIS time for them....

Besides its enormous strength this storm is also very slow moving. This means it will probably sit over the island for a long time.
