I don't know when hurricane season is or isn't (and I'm glad I don't need to know) but I just saw a news piece talking about a storm growing in strength in the Caribbean. Big storm events always cause tragedy. They make me feel sorry for people so affected. And unlike when these events happen along the US coasts and people (presumably) have the opportunity to get into their cars and drive inland, people living on islands in the Caribbean are not only less affluent but also may have nowhere to flee to. Maybe going inland is possible for those who live along the coast but many of the islands that get hit by storms with some regularity are pretty small and don't have much in the way of inland or higher ground areas to go to.

I wish the pour souls well.

CBS news / weather is talking about Melissa now. Catastrophic for Jamaica / Bahamas 130 mph winds. On this coast & in PNW we are currently experiencing another ”atmospheric river” which means the torrential rainfall & high winds I’m seeing right now. A real gully washer. Snow in mountains & this storm will push all the way to Montana Rocky Mountains.

Good luck. That's one kind of extreme weather that we seem to be getting more of too. I don't like rainy days much to begin with but when rainy weather comes with high winds and strong downpours, with all the damage that can cause, it's even worse.

In winter, you'd rather have four or even eight times the area to distribute water to, but in the heat of summer, the water just doesn't go as far as the evapotranspiration rates are so much higher. *** *** In Southern California this past winter, we set an all-time historic record for low rainfall. After I read this for the first time, I searched "mangosteen" and there's been recent food blog posts of sitings of fresh mangosteen in Chinatown(NY). I'll have to check when i'm there. 2 for $9 though? I might do it once and then will have to LOVE it to do it again, lol. Ohiojay: The next 10 years?! That's crazy ridiculous, not even at Baldor's in NY? I think i'll call them and ask. Everytime I'm at Dean & Deluca's i'm on the lookout, but the most exotic fruit they've had there is probably the Cherimoya or Sweetsop, which seemed old to me so I've never bought them. I'm happy to be able to get Lychees, Rambutans, and Longans once in a while, but something new would be nice. I can say though that once I saw Green Sapotes at a Japanese supermarket and it was a nice find albeit pricey. :)

Hey everyone! I'm alive and well, I just got my power back on. 6 1/2 days without power. I did enjoy the peace and quite, but it was starting to get cold at night, so it's nice to have it back. Around me did receive damage, but me, my family and my roses were spared. Our oak trees protected us. I hope everyone else was spared some of the worse. Virginia, I heard Florence, around 30 minutes from me received worse than I did. Mostly alot of down trees and power outages here. I hope you are doing well. I live in a 55+ community in Florida and they have canceled all organized activities (including trash collection for tomorrow) until Saturday due to the threat of the weather event. This hurricane won’t affect me. It is simple, I have a sign on my roof. Most people cannot see it, even the missus. Basically, it indicates that “Jim” lives here. Significant weather events just pass by. Every time I move, I bring the sign with me. To show that effective it is, a few moments ago I looked at the weather radar and it showed several of the ‘outer bands’ of this current hurricane approaching the county where I live. The sign did the trick, all dissipated before getting close to my place. The same thing happened with hurricane Hermine in August. We had the hurricane warning in effect and I got a couple of small branches that fell and less than 2” of rain in 24 hours. The sign was working its magic. Are you worried about weather events? You might try a sign on your roof like mine. Although you might need to use my name, I don’t know about that!

I saw where they are expecting up to 60” of rain in the mountains and up to 30” of rain at the coasts of Jamaica. Catastrophic flooding and mudslides are guaranteed. :(

Looks calm out there now in my corner of the PNW but, what a mess in our back yard from the neighboring towering Doug Firs! A mess of needles, cones & small branches. I’ll get my exercise in today between the showers in forecast. I love my cordless blower for this job - we have @ 1,100 square ft of paver patio which is easy to clean off.

With very fortunate timing, I just had 4 of my 6 downspouts cleared. It was a big job, as they had been sadly neglected for years. (One had a little tree growing inside.) The fellow who did the work was excellent, and did a good job. One required a french barrel type of solution. Another one needed a sizable trench dug. Im so glad it's done.

I just took a look at updated reports. The forecasters expect winds in excess of 150 mph and rainfall of 40 inches or more in some areas. I hope as sometimes happens that the forecasts are worst case and pessimistic and that the ultimate outcomes will be less severe.

Forecasters are saying that Melissa will most likely be the worst hurricane to ever hit Jamaica in recorded history. Major flooding is already occurring, and the storm won't even directly hit the coast until early Tues morning. The US got lucky this year, hope this signals the end of the 2025 hurricane season.

I've been following a couple of meteorologists that are covering Melissa and it sure looks to be devastating. There are lots of Americans are currently there on vacation. We've known this hurricane has been coming for a while and they still went. Mind boggling.

BBC news reported that the reason that Melissa is expected to be so huge is that we are now getting close to the end of this year's hurricane season, and there have been no previous storms in the Caribbean that could have cooled the water there, and therefore the Caribbean is quite a bit hotter than usual - thus the storm can be more powerful.

Forty inches of rain will be catastrophic, and although it was reported that people have been told to evacuate, they did not say where they were supposed to evacuate to.

Is there any high ground in Jamaica? There is a substantial Jamaican community in the Boston area and they are preparing food and aid packages. What a helpless feeling.

Jamaica has coffee called Blue Mountain. I found this about it…….

To be labeled Jamaica Blue Mountain, the coffee must be grown in certain areas--Saint Mary, Saint Thomas, Saint Andrew, and Portland. The coffee must be grown between elevations of 3,000 and 5,500 feet. Coffee grown between 1,500 and 3,000 feet is considered Jamaica High Mountain while coffee grown below 1,500 feet is Jamaica Low Mountain or Jamaica Supreme.

Turks & Caicos has warnings too. I've been there during a hurricane....the boat captain hid us behind a reef....we got high winds and rain. Nothing too ominous, back then. Fingers crossed it's THAT mild THIS time for them....

Besides its enormous strength this storm is also very slow moving. This means it will probably sit over the island for a long time.
