The weather in my area isn't very variable this time of year. It's not like it is in some places - "if you don't like the weather, wait a few hours, it will be completely different". We rarely have anything like that. Fronts approach gradually and that's usually in the winter, bringing rain.

This time of year, there can be early morning overcast (especially early in the summer) and when so, it clears without that much of an impact on the temperature compared to days that start out clear.

Today, the overnight low at my Bay Area location was a near-constant 70 degrees (according to hourly weather data available at the Weather Underground site). That's about 10 degrees higher than normal. The day started out being overcast, and the morning progressed with little warming.

Just before noon, the clouds broke and it started warming up at a serious rate. In about 2 hours, it was nearly 90 degrees, which is not uncharacteristic as a daily high but a bit warmer than average. What was uncharacteristic was the speed of the warmup.

It's now 6:30pm, nearly 80 degrees still, and the normal afternoon cooling didn't much happen.

What's up?

It's not a West Coast thing. We on the East Coast are in July temps and a super drought. It is almost 2AM and the temp outside is 74!! I hate it, and it's super humid too.

Must be a West Coast thing going on - we’re @ 10 degrees warmer than the norm here. It hit 87 yesterday & 85 today…forecast is 74 & mostly cloudy tomorrow. That’s closer to normal here at this time.

It got quite warm this afternoon here in coastal Orange county, but it's cooling off now. I think it's supposed to be in the upper 60's during the next few days which will be a relief from the upper 70's/low 80's that we've been experiencing.

Supposed to be near 60 all week, with colder nights. We need some rain, very dry despite some occasional showers. Just not much rain dropped as they pass by. Most of the trees are bare and color gone,but pasture grass and lawns are very green, still growing. I am having to water my newly planted shrubs, hope they are growing lots of roots! Have a few plants like Sedum to cut before they turn to mush in cold. Other garden beds, tomatoes, Peonies, are cleaned out, prepared for winter. Mulched with shredded Oak leaves so they look pretty nice! I never burn leaves, but the neighbors have been VERY busy, so we have that "Fall tang" in the air to breathe as clouds of smoke roll past. Sounds of yard machines, mowers, blowers, in the air. Everything else is pretty winterized, because LAST year, winter came early and STAYED until after New Years! Just the odd jobs of putting away the bigger equipment for easy winter plowing is left. Winter tanks are out, just not running heaters yet. Horses all are very furry, just full of themselves in the cooler morning air. Lots of galloping and game playing when they come out for the day.

I haven't been here in a while, as I had a baby . . . who is now two and a half. And I now have another baby . . . but here I am! Weather has been, let's say, "less than ideal". I planted a ton of bulbs and transplanted a bunch of perennials last fall, and was delighted to get good snow cover early. It seemed fine when it all was melted off the beds by late April too, until it went back down to -30. I lost every plant in a big swath of my new bed. I maybe could have covered it, but I was nine months pregnant,so iI didn't. Since then, we've had at least two nice days :P I found myself coming back here to check for hardiness before I replanted my beds, and thought I should check in. Also, hello to tanlinetracy, you're in my hometown! I live in Sk now but grew up in fairview. And I'm really glad to see so many names I recognize from my first stint here.

Ummmm...your eggs don't look like asparagus fern fruit to me. I think you may have been right the first time. They look just like lizard eggs. But maybe you have broken them open and found out that they are "fruity" inside? In the photo, I would have sworn they were lizard eggs. The other thing (on top) doesn't look like any real life bird bill I ever saw. The top portion is too perfectly straight across, for one thing. Are you absolutely sure it isn't plastic of some sort? It's interesting, for sure. Let us know if you identify it. Check with your local college and see if someone there can confirm what the material is, and you'll have a better idea. The petrified frog is a more common thing. I've seen dead frogs look like that from time to time. He probably did just "croak" (pardon my pun) there, and for whatever reason, got dried out and mummified. (Maybe the extreme heat of this summer, during the drought, did it.) We're getting another winter storm here on the coast of NC. Getting ice, but no snow this close to the coast. Some of the counties just inland from us are getting several inches. It was starting to ice around lunchtime. I told my supervisor around 2pm that I was going home so I could get across the bridges before they iced. Good thing, because several accidents were later reported on the big bridge I use. I was planning to print something out to work on at home, but as I started back to my office the power went out. My office is delayed until 12pm tomorrow, but if things continue as they are I'll be surprised if we open.

Thanks food. It’s always nice to learn that apparent perceptions are real and not imagined. The last occurence of lightning a few years ago caused a big fire in the mountains above the beach town Santa Cruz.

Also, it was muggy today. Equally unusual

We are experiencing moisture from the south, resulting in unusual humidity for the area. I grew up in Houston and really enjoy these "humid" days in the Bay Area. Far less humid than the Gulf Coast with just enough moisture to make the air feel really soft on my skin. This weather would be seen as a fabulous fall day in Houston.

Ditto Lily. The lawns have been covered in brown leaves since July, and the apples fell way too early. Instead of getting finished off by the usual September frost, the pole beans are still producing so heavily that I've been sharing them with my Scrabble group, and my son took a large quantity of them to work to distribute to his co-workers. I'm getting tired of summer bedding and summer clothes . . .

We had on the Central Coast California thunder and lightning all night. That is extremly unusual. Also it stayed in the 60's overnight when it usually drops to the 50's. The temperatures have been all over the map.

ljrar, you're the first person I've ever encountered to express affection for outdoor heat and high humidity. For me and many others, humidity makes the air feel drenchingly wet and uncomfortable on our skin, not soft. But I'm glad you're happy with it.

For the benefit of readers elsewhere, it's still a bit muggier than normal today but the thunderstorms have moved on.

Edit to add:

My comment above may be misleading as I reread it. I enjoy dry heat to almost any extreme, but I find elevated humidity with even moderate temperatures to be uncomfortable. We all like different things

Weather here is normal, except that we got a lot of rain this summer, which made for interesting vegetable gardening.

68F right now and partly sunny--no rain expected for a week! Yayyy!!!

Bugs are gone, autumn color is here, and no freezing at night yet. Life is good

Except: the wildfire smoke coming at us from Canada played havoc with lungs and sunshine. A real drag.

We've had unusual spates of heat here, near Chicago. It's unusual to have the A/C going this often. At least we're getting some rain now and then.

Haha Elmer. I enjoy the 70 degree + a little humidity weather currently happening in San Francisco in comparison to the 90+ degree heat with 90% humidity of Houston. I also prefer it to very dry weather we often have that can make me feel parched.

Our summer here has been fairly normal, adequate rainfall with only 2 days over 100F. Right now we're keeping an eye on those 2 tropical systems approaching the east coast, they're keeping the weather dudes scratching their heads on exactly what will happen by early next week. Potential major flooding in the Carolinas, again. We'll know soon enough.

ljwrar, you live in San Francisco and find it dry and parched? That's a new one for me too.

SF and starting a bit to the south, Big Sur/Monterey and then again on the Peninsula Coast and extending north to and into Oregon, has got to be the the dampest, foggiest stretch of earth I've ever experienced. In the city of SF especially.

You surely know that away from SF, around the Bay Area and inland north, east and south is more like normal temperate California weather, sunshine with limited rainfall and low relative humidity most of the year except on rainy days. Along the coast is something else.

It sounds like you've moved from one extreme (Houston) to another.
