What flowers were your 1st garden love?
Comments (63)Hello juanital aka garden_momma, " Can the growth and bloom be done with anything under lights? " I wouldn't go so far as to say anything, but a lot of things can be grown under lights, provided that some things are taken into account. Outdoors, many potential pests have natural enemies that keep them in check. For example, aphids, thrips, and fungus gnats. Indoors, in the absence of "natural enemies", those pests can have devastating population explosions. and some control should be used if you notice one of those pests. I have been fortunate not to have a problem the last three years, but I did discontinue the practice of bringing zinnia cuttings indoors in the Fall. and that apparently was one way I was bringing outdoor pests indoors. Growth under lights is used to start a wide variety of plants as seedlings in the Spring, which are then set into the garden to get an early start, as an alternative to just planting the seeds in the garden after the soil warms up. Indoor starting can become indoor gardening. There are books on the subject. Since zinnias are a hobby for me, being able to raise zinnias year-round has been a big help. That way I can get four generations of zinnias in a year, which speeds up my ability to get new forms of zinnias. ZM...See More1st year review of Anemone 'Wild Swan'
Comments (64)I was browsing the internet for reviews and/or comments about Wild Swan and this thread came up. So I'll ask here. I planted mine in the Spring of 2015 and still no blooms. The foliage seems healthy, hasn't wilted despite this past hot summer, but not as full as I see in photos posted here. There is even new growth coming from the center. However, no blooms. It is in semi shade until 2pm. and then gets full sun for several hours. Good soil with leaf mulch. I'm wondering if I should move it and try again somewhere else, but I'd hate to lose it altogether. I don't even think nurseries here are carrying it anymore, perhaps other gardeners did not have success with it here in NE Ohio....See More1st Post Woo Hoo!
Comments (21)Hi Mnkitty! Sam Kedem is from Israel. I asked him one time and he made me guess. I grow Reine des Violettes and Tradescant, among others. I don't do the Minnesota tip on any of them. Professor Roush is right--whether you bother with it or not depends on how much of the rose you want to survive. Most of the once-bloomers are quite hardy and don't need tipping anyway in our zone. I dump some leaves around the base of each one in fall if I get around to it. Austin roses, Bucks, HTs and Floribundas need a little more mulching to protect as much cane as possible. Don't remove the mulch until late April or so, when the leaves start to come out. Using fall leaves to mulch is easier than the Minnesota Tip but your roses stay shorter. Purple roses--I grow the Gallica 'Ombree Parfaite' and the HP 'Reine des Violettes' and they both do fine. 'Ombree Parfaite' makes a really attractive leafy shrub. I got mine from Pickering in Canada. I used to have the Floribunda 'Ebb Tide' and liked it a lot. It needs a good blanket of mulch/leaves, though, to make it through the winter. I gave it to a friend who loves purple roses, and she didn't protect it, so it died. Of course the hardiest, most fragrant and easiest roses for Minnesotans are the Rugosas. I have a lot of them, but no purple ones; I have Roseraie de l'Hay, which is sort of a crimson-purple, and wonderfully fragrant. There is also one called Purple Pavement you might check out (I don't have that one). I also grow 'Ann Endt'--very hardy and healthy shrub, very purple single flower. Good luck!...See MoreSS Support Mon. July 26th thru Sunday August 1st
Comments (47)Hi all, I come by and check but don't read everything. I see Marci and Dee said hi, and maybe others have, too. My family's left. I don't know if I mentioned it, but they were successful in their attempt to set up swimming with the dolphins. I couldn't go to that, but did get to swim in the ocean. That's not something I can ordinarily do because of my illness and disabilities. I tried to post a couple of days ago, but everything that came out sounded upset and I didn't want to scare anyone. :) I've been ill the last few days. I talked to my doctor and she said it sounds like viral meningitis. That's the mild kind, not the kind that can leave a person brain damaged or dead, so its nothing to worry about, just uncomfortable - who needs more pain and fatigue. I might go in to her office tomorrow. Tropical Storm Celia went by here yesterday. She was a hurricane a few days ago, but diminished. There was thunder and lightning and heavy rain and winds, but nothing too damaging. Just enough excitement but not too much. I've got into anime for reasons I won't go into. I ordered Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. Has anyone here seen it? Does anyone know or remember the song by Don McLean, "Chain Lightning?" I've always liked that song. Very dramatic. My internet relationship, which I talked about earlier, is still going strong - seven months now. I said that he is very unhappy and troubled, which is still true, but he has turned out to be also very caring, intelligent, and sweet. I hope we can continue to be friends for a long time, and I hope his situation improves for him. I've been reading about the get together next year. Remember, I'd like a video. :) I know that it will be a blast. It's nice to come here and have this group. You are such a loving bunch where all are welcome. There have been so many ups and downs, but people are always supportive and caring. Love to you, thanks for remembering me, and I hope everyone has a good day. I'm not spending as much time here as I was, which may change (who knows) but I won't get lost. It's been so frustrating to me when others that I care about quit posting and then I never know how they are doing. Also I've asked my son to let people here know if anything happens to me so that everyone won't be wondering. He knows how important this group has been to me.
