Advice on painting this basket
(note: couldn't cross post with other forums, had to start a new thread here)
I've had this lidded basket a very long time, I quite like it. This is my home office, and I keep items in the basket that I use (i.e. it's a functional basket, not just a decorative one). Problem is, the color of it doesn't look great against the new table DH recently made me. So, I thought I'd paint it.
But, the more I look at it, the more I wonder if that's easier said than done. Spray paint would be the easiest but how would that turn out with the flower medallions that have the basket color between the "petals". Tape off the medallions, spray, then go back with a teeny-tiny brush and fill in the gaps? Use a brush for the whole thing? If not spray paint, what type of paint (I am not a crafter, I'm clueless about this stuff...). Or buy something new and re-purpose the basket elsewhere.

Comments (6)Sometimes it's nice not to have a solid color but to get a color wash instead - depends on what you're after. If you want a solid look, it's tough to do with a brush - much easier to spray and you don't need a primer. For a color wash you can thin some paint down and brush it on - if it's not enough, let it dry and do another coat. Comments (8)Rustoleum high heat paint comes in white, almond, green, black and silver, but I don't think I'd use anything but the black. the point of it being black is so it looks sort of like iron, IMO. I've never liked bright brass fireplace doors, and think all black would be an improvement, but that's just my taste. Your pics are too small to see any detail about what's behind the glass. Since the glass is smoked, you aren't going to see the firebox whatever the color of the doors. If it looks too dark and featureless to you without the brass, why not put a real or faux plant in front of the doors when it's not in use? Or a small sculpture or other decorative object (or two or three) that you can easily move to the use the FP? Comments (21)Deepak- Did you just move into this house or just purchase this house and your wife hates this dark kitchen? If so, then it is understandable that she wants white cabinets. Some people just don't like dark cabinets and want white cabinets, and they are entitled to them. The grey floors are another matter. Grey is very "now." That means it is a trend, which will fall out of fashion very soon. I understand that she or you do not like the current floors, they are very busy, with two contrasting colors. But grey may not be the way to go for the reason I just mentioned. As for the counters, that stone is very dark and very busy and may not be to your wife's or your taste. It actually seems less oppressive when the cabinets are white, but sometimes the people who like white cabinets like a lighter stone for countertops such as a marble or marble look-a like such as quartz or silestone.. Some may like a dark stone that is more uniform such as a soapstone or soapstone lookalike. When all the cabinetry is white, it is important to add interest with hardware, such as larger handles and knobs. Some people choose handles and knobs or pulls that are black, even wrought iron ones or larger brushed nickel, or stainless steel. Some people decide to paint the island a different color that they like, e.g. a blue or green (whatever color they like that coordinates with adjoining rooms) or they keep the cabinets and island all white introduce color into the kitchen through their use of accessories such as the dishes, dishtowels, a curtain, a canister of kitchen utensils, a pitcher, a cutting board, a basket, flowers, etc. Because the house once lived in will always have these things around to introduce color and texture to the all white kitchen. Comments (2)I would not paint the stairs or railing. Paint will flake and peel, and painted treads will be slippery. Stain them the same color as the wood on the screened porch, or seal them with a good oil base exterior wood sealer....See More

10 months agoSkipping down to share that my favorite paint for baskets is metallic - silver especially. I've freshened up a number of shabby baskets that way. And I do prefer spray paint, since it goes on more evenly.
These aren't mine, but for illustration:
One thing I learned the hard way is to use a brush to carefully clean all the nooks and crannies, because if there's any dust, it will reveal itself and become permanent. You can even wash most baskets and let them air dry before painting.porkchop_z5b_MI thanked carolb_w_fl_coastal_9/10
