Americans' Most Valuable Asset Is Social Security

I came upon an interesting article in the NY Times today that says that the stream of Social Security payments Americans receive or will receive in later years is the largest single asset most people own.

The average monthly benefit for a retired worker is a tad over $2,000.

When enacted, it was intended to be a safety net to provide a baseline existence for people of lower economic means. For many today, especially as the increases in benefits have greatly surpassed the increases in contributions into the system by people while still employed, it's often the sole or overwhelmingly most significant source of income to meet living expenses.

Not a bad thing at all and obviously quite essential. It's a major federal spending obligation, the magnitude of which many are unaware of.
