Cell phone required to access your 'My Social Security' account
Comments (60)Haha. The email is clearly real. I got one and thought nothing more of it until coming upon this thread. There's an irony with this. Two-step authorization measures are implemented, in part, precisely because people get hysterical about security and perceived risks. So the very measure used to address those who are worried about security, is distrusted by those same people and leads to more feelings of risk and insecurity. Too many folks, especially oldsters, don't want to be confronted with truth or fact that conflicts with a view they've reached and want to cling to. It's unbelievable. Those of you who want to think of the email as being phony are entitled to do so. Just don't be shocked with what happens the next time you try to sign in to the SSA website (you'll be asked to supply a cell phone number to receive a text). I just tried it out, it works fine. Those who don't have a cellphone can call or visit a SSA office. This isn't a big deal, it's just an added security step for web access. Yawn....See MoreHow can I find out my deceased step mother's social security number
Comments (11)I inherited an IRA as well. Upon death it was put in my name w/my ss#.I mean really.... they want taxes from the living. Yes, my SSN is on the account now, but the paperwork that I was filling out for the new brokerage needed the SSN of the person I inherited it from. Apparently there are different rules for these inherited IRAs than other types of accounts. I can't believe how easy it was to find it on the National Archives site. I didn't even need her full date of birth or death to find it....See MoreSocial security scam?
Comments (15)I did all my application for SS this last time via phone. They set up a phone appt with me and THEY CALLED ME! I had called them in response to a letter I got, waited a really long time on hold- like 45 min or longer to talk to someone, who actually couldn't help me; her only job was to make a phone appointment for someone to call me back who could help me. I had to wait weeks to get a phone appt because they make so many phone calls! Social Security DOES make phone calls! I think what you mean is they don't initiate things the first time, via phone. You won't get a cold call from SS asking for something about your account. But they most definitely will conduct business with you via phone and they will call you! I was told I could also go for an in person appt at my local office, but if I remember correctly, she couldn't make me an appt there, only for a phone appt. If I wanted in-person, I had to stop by the office and make one myself. This all happened within the last 6 months. I think your woman just works in another division and not the phone appointment department and maybe is unaware that SS does make phone calls to you!...See MoreSocial Security Admin scam...
Comments (24)Just yesterday our IT dept gave us our monthly security updates. A new thing is for robocalls to your phone. They also 'spoof' numbers, so it looks like someone you know or from a call in your area code, etc. Hang up when you get these calls and NEVER say anything that sounds like yes. They can actually record your responses and then use them to charge things to your phone, even if you have no idea that they're doing that. Also never reply to texts or emails, they're usually automated and when there is a reply it's a hit and they know they have a good number. Just DELETE at all times. It happens more with companies than private people, but apparently 3 of our Directors got an email from our Agency Director requesting some sensitive information-and it wasn't from her at all-her name had been 'spoofed'. One of the victims happened to call her and ask about the email and she verified she'd never sent it-she even went to her own email account and there was nothign from her. So bottom line is just DO NOT engage at all. Delete the texts, emails, hang up the phone without saying anything. If it is truly a legitimate agency, they will provide YOU with the info, and not ask you to give them your info....See Morekathyg_in_mi
