Have you checked to see if there are any wildlife rehab specialists near you? I'd try that first.

Well, my saga ended with a person with a gun and a taser in my house. For the past three days, I have contacted all wildlife centers, and one was far away and the closer one was not accepting any squirrels. I was in contact with two, and they said he needs to be taken to a wildlife center which is hard to do when they'aren't accepting and one is very far away. That center told me to post on FB or NextDoor if any volunteers were bringing orphans in, which I did. Talking to one center today I told them I was feeding him sushed bananas with a dollop of yogurt and she said ...not good but only they can get "squirrel formula". She said call the PA Game Commission and ask a warden. My daughter said she thought I was smarter than that. I gave my name, asked my question and then hung up when I was getting no answers. Twenty minutes later, my husband called upstairs. There was a game commissioner officer at the door. They even knew his name by me just giving mine. But of course they had the number and could find the address. Both husband and daughter have had long careers with the state government in the environmental agencies. But I hate the Game Commission and always have so I lied and said it died. She said you just talked to us 20 minutes ago, and I said but I hadn't checked on him since feeding. So she asked where the body was because she knew I was lying. I told her I wasn't handing over this sweet little guy for her to kill. She noticed a bandage on my arm, which I cut on the cage, and asked if he bit me or scratched me. We were at an impasse when she called the volunteer transportation people and gave me the phone and they said they'd call back. They did in five minutes and I gave the phone to her. Since my husband said he was going to be at work tomorrow morning and my bedroom is so far from the side door we use, I gave the baby to her and she said she'd give it to the volunteer. I said goodbye to the little sweet guy and called my daughter, who said ...and you believed her? They will kill it. Husband doesn't think they will, but how will I know? I spent three days trying my best to get him a few more weeks. He was small but looked just like an adult with the fluffy tail and big eyes. Daughter said.. remember the guy who had a pet squirrel he dressed up and lived with and posted on FB? He was arrested, and the squirrel was killed. I just couldn't let him lie in that cool ground as the sun went down.

Lily, that's so upsetting. I feel for you. You did your best for him.

Thanks, Alisande. I need to hike with blinders on since I found a baby bird last month alive on the road with her two siblings crushed beside her. I tried to save her too without success.

I'm sorry. We do our best for these creatures, but have to recognize that for so many of them, a short life is not uncommon. It's still hard to see...my mind easily recalls so many instances with various kinds of wildlife we've seen die for so many different reasons. We can't save them all.

I wish I'd seen this original post when it first appeared. I have a useful book, Care of the Wild, Feathered and Furred, that might have helped. Of course, everything in it is probably on the internet now. And for everyone's future reference, Facebook has an active group called Squirrel Lovers.

Thanks for the link, but my fingers have been busy for three days googling everything and anything , even AI about feeding baby squirrels. I posted on FB, Next Door, and all said get him to a rescue center. The game commission lady did leave this ...WIW Wildlife In Need and a number for this volunteer group that collects and carries animal orphans to centers. I want to believe he's there getting nourishment I couldn't give him.

I have been like this as a young kid. Finding helpless babies and raising them as best I could. I had many successes as well as failures. No one else in my family has ever done this including my kids.

This story reminds me of years back I went to my local dive and a woman was there with a little squirrel. It seemed comfortable wirh her and with us humans in general. She told some story about how she stumbled scross this little fella who needed her help. Then she told of a previous squirrel rescue, and another. 🤔

I have raised a lot of baby squirrels. If it ever happens again, you can give it Esbilac, like for puppies. Give it with a dropper, altho a Miracle nipple on a syringe is ideal, but I think you have to order those online. I am sorry I didn't see this sooner. I had to raise a baby blue jay awhile back because no rehabber would take it. I rehabbed for 23 years, but wasn't licensed for birds, but when no one would take him, I raised him. I knew how to do it. I also knew birds must be raised in a flight cage to prevent damage to their flight feathers. Not having a flight cage, I had a bathroom in my office in the barn that was 12 x 4 1/2 ft, so that became his flight cage.

Oh man, I'm so sorry this happened to you. 20 years ago I found 2 " pinkies" in the back yard and got hold of a local wildlife rehabber. She taught me what to do to raise them. Feed them a solution with a small syringe slowly, so they don't aspirate, every 2 hours. It was basically IV electrolytes for humans. Then progressed to powdered pablum, then nuts and vegetables. I kept them on a heating pad then a large cage with a stick so they'd learn to climb. I carried them in my shirt when I first got them, for warmth.
