If you worry where to plant - make a lasagna bed ( a lot of pics)
Comments (17)manda 3 - last year, I started in the Spring. I didn't have dates on my camera that time, so I'm not sure exactly when. Judging by the order of my pictures, it was just befor the Easter. I haven't done this in one day. I was adding additional material with time. As it was pointed out, it did condensed. At the begining, I started with carboard, coffee grounds, kitchen scabs. With time, I knew I had to use material ready for planting. So, I had a layer of soil, peat most, compost, etc. Frankly, I was using whatever I could find on sale at that time. I think, I was building almost until tomatoes' planting time. Interesting, the bed didn't shrank much more. In the fall, when I cleaned tomatoes, I removed the fence and my DH took those bricks away (they are left over from building a house and will be used for outside BBQ). Anyway, in the spring he'll build me a bed from wood, similar to other beds in the garden. As a matter of fact, he wants the space between the house and the bed (see morz8's comments). I guess, we'll have to do it. BTW, last year, I've buit two beds like this. This one was for tomatoes, the other one was for potaoes. I didn't have much soil, compost, etc, etc. So the potatoes bed didn't get much of that good staff. Needless to say, I can attest, potaoes don't like to grow on the carboard only and be covered with only strow. But that's another story and, again, quite a few pictures.......See MoreRe: Make ahead lasagna
Comments (3)I would make it Tuesday, refrigerate it, and bake it Wednesday. Do it a bit ahead; I find things like that improve and are easier to serve if they sit a bit. But if for some reason it's easier for you to bake it Tuesday, too, and reheat it Wednesday, that will also work fine. Have fun!...See MoreHow far ahead can I make a lasagna?
Comments (9)Oh, right, the 22nd is a Sunday...the big prep day. Should be a relax day, lol. But no, it is a multi-task day. Not sure of your family favorite recipe, but my winter lasagna is much more dense and rich compared to my late summer veggie lasagna.... When i do the winter version i make a crockpot chili at the same time as they use similar ingredients except for the spices and final additions... For the lasagna i do all the prep, the sauce, caramelized onions and mushrooms, etc. , and 'build it' and bake just 1/2 hour short, chill, and top with cheese and fridge, covered. I can finish the baking the next day or two days later... Three days is a stretch, but if chilled in the coldest part of your fridge it should be fine. Or prep all the 'layers' and keep them cold and in the fridge and do a final quick assembly the night before?. Three-four days for left-overs is not a problem...my limit is three, DH will go four, lol. You don't want to serve left-overs, so if you bake it 2/3ds and get it cold fast in the coldest part of your fridge and do the final bake Christmas day, it will taste fresh. The only trouble is if your fridge get so much action and is full and not holding a good cold temp...from opening often by family members off school and work, things will spoil faster, so crank it colder for x-mas week and all your foods will be fine. If you have snow like we do, bake it and chill it in a snow pack under the casserole dish to chill quick. Extending a dish for later serving is really all about how well you get it cold fast, then keeping it chilled......See MoreWhat Would You Serve with Butternut Squash Lasagna?
Comments (9)I've attached the recipe that I've used for a long time, adapted from Gourmet Magazine.....it also has heavy cream and lots of rosemary. I can tell you that it.is.freaking.delicious. I served stuffed mushroom caps, marinated garden veggies, puff pastry cheese bites as appetizers. Sides included steamed haricot verts in a herb butter, spring greens salad with lemony vinaigrette (served as a side, not a course), marinated garden veggies. Dessert was homemade lemon ice cream, chocolate dipped shortbread cookies, fresh fruit and berries. This was a meatless dinner, but I've also served the lasagna as a side with herbed baked chicken or a nice ham. Look at this recipe option....See More- 6 months ago
