grandparents and reading
Comments (5)I'm not a grandma yet but hope you won't mind me contributing my two cents, since I love to read. I remember my mom crawling into bed with my brother and me and reading "chapter" books before we were old enough to read them on our own. We couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen! When I grew up and had three children of my own I dedicated time to reading to them one on one since they were four years apart and it wasn't as often as my mom did. She was a SAHM and I worked full-time. So what I think is that Grandparents have the opportunity to give their grandchildren that quality time that their working parents may not be able to give. (Even if the parents do have the best of intentions). One of the things I am most looking forward to when I am a Grandma is that wonderful one-on-one reading time. Or if I am very, very, lucky multiple-on-one reading time! What a good excuse to re-visit Little House on the Prarie and Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates!...See MoreFirst-time expectant grandparent

I can tell you my mother was probably extremely distressed while I was pregnant. (I was 29, never told me, however - a good thing because I would have worried about her worrying) I had lost one pregnancy before, and had some issues with my next, nothing outrageous, just a bit nerve wracking. My mother was thrilled at the prospect of a grandchild but I still think she worried about what it would be like for me. If you think about it, how do you describe to someone who does not have kids, what it is like to be a mom? There are just no words, too many emotions. I know if when my daughter has a baby I will be very nervous. I think years ago when women had babies there wasn't all this test and that test, ultrasound, 10 bloodworks, etc. I think if I were to have had a second child I would have "opted out" of many of the tests. I never thought I would have kids. Didn't play dolls as a kid, closest was Barbie dolls with dress up clothes. I am still not a "baby" person. I babysat a little, but as soon as I could, I got a "real job" working with adults. I like kids, just am not one of those girls who dreamed of getting married and having babies. So when I had my daughter I figured I was set with one. I was surprised at what a good mom I became. I was fortunate enough to be a stay at home mom, reading, gymboree, and all the fun stuff I could do with her we did. She went to museums and other cultural things as a young child. I know I am prejudiced, but she is one beautiful, smart, kind, soon to be 16 year old girl. I will say my MIL probably was not so happy for other reason. I think when you become a "grandmother" it signifies a change in your life. Some people need a little adjustment time. By the time my daughter was born she was fine. JMHO:-) Also, congrats to everyone in your family....See MoreMy Grandparents old buffet...should I take it??

You can make up for a lack of symmetry with a sense of balance. The most important thing is that it flow in the room and is anchored by other elements in the room. Perhaps you can center it relative to the wall closet opposite? Which gives it is sense of purpose so that these two areas become your organization/storage for indoor/outdoor items, mail, etc. One of the side shelves could even be a purse/briefcase (or later diaperbag) repository. I recommend the mirror and lamps similar to mine. The mirror serves not only as decor, but function so you can make a last minute check on appearance before heading out the door. Didn't you have a mantle clock? If so, that'd work well in the center, probably better than my pitcher given the proposed location. If you put decor on the top you will be less inclined to clutter it up--esp. if you designate one of the drawers for "clutter". It works with the spindle table in the room, but in this case I would not put a mirror above the spindle table, instead some artwork would look nice there, or perhaps a chair where someone could sit and put on their shoes. Perhaps even revist the idea of angling the spindle table so that everything is not linear. My take is a bit different than teacats in that I prefer not only woods to match or be very similar within a room, but the style as well. Your style seems similar to mine in that you have a mix of transitional and antique going on. Do you have a family room also? If not, then it would be a good thing to have a few bare spots in the LR to keep the future baby's playthings. I can see it working well as a salon piece also, but would be concerned the finish would get damaged by all the hair care products, scissors, etc. unless you were to get a glass top made for it....See MoreHelp me name my Etsy store!
Comments (67)terricks, My daughter is a travel blogger and sometimes does product reviews on their website and IG etc. Your sleep sack looks perfect for their upcoming van trip. You can contact her at Don'tforgettomove.com to see if she is interested. She and her partner have a pretty big following and have worked with Intel, Kettle Brand, Chevy, Michelin (the Michelin man is so much shorter than I thought!) many other big companies, filmed a pilot for the Travel Channel, up for a big award in Sri Lanka in October. So, pretty big. Mention my name and she might do it for free (but you would need to send her one) she might even take a pic that you can use on your etsy site with an endorsement. Good luck with your store!...See More- 9 months ago
