Burpee Seeds and WalMart?
Comments (15)The big box stores in general are pretty bad in keeping things appropriate to the location. Every year, they get those god-awful little sad sticks in boxes brought in during February, when we have 2 1/2 months before it would be safe to plant them out here in Michigan. And invariably, they have cultivars like Thompson Seedless grapes that can't possibly survive here. I've also seen other gems like rabbiteye blueberries, fuzzy kiwi, etc. Mind you, as someone willing to try via "extraordinary techniques" to overwinter out of zone plants, I find it interesting, but its bad and deceptive for the novice who doesn't know the difference. As far as the enormous operations that supply plants for the big-box stores, I find it fascinating that they have such complex systems set up, yet can't manage to find enough people to unload, unpack, water, and properly care for these plants once they arrive at your local Wal-mart, Home Depot, Lowe's,, etc. I always wondered how they made ANY profit at all, given the high cost of inputs such as energy, when they are all paid essentially on commission under these pay-by-scanned-sales programs, and so much of the plant material dies in the retail outlet due to abuse, neglect, and just plain market saturation beyond all reasonable ability to sell it all. But, they must, or it wouldn't happen. I guess the good side -- some of these places, particularly Lowe's, are pretty good about marking things down dramatically to move them -- I get good bargains on things all the time. Best was a few years back at the end of season at my local Home Depot, when they got down to the "everything in small pots is $0.50, everything in medium pots is $1, and everything larger is $2" by Halloween -- I ended up getting several cartloads of nice nursery stock for next to nothing -- Buddleia, crabapples, maples, all kinds of things. Best was a grafted dwarf mounding blue spruce, original price $80, for $2....See MoreLost Child in Wal-Mart
Comments (7)I am glad that the child was found and congrats to you for taking an active approach! I get so tired so the "who cares" or "whatever" attitude that too many people have today. I have dealt with Wal-Mart on the policy end of things and let me tell you it isn't pretty. I trained service dogs for special needs children for a several years and, as you may know, all public places (for a few exceptions of wildlife sanctuary and churches) are required by federal to allow such animals into their stores and many states (such as mine) have the same laws for service animals in training. ANYWAY WM was/is notorious for not having education employees on these laws and 99% of the time you are stopped and told to get the dog/animal out of the store. Most of the time when explained everything is fine but other times it doesn't matter, police are called, and it is a big hassle (police are sometimes worse educated on the subject than the employees). Let me saw now that (in my experience) WM doesn't do anything unless it has too and after several lawsuits (harassment) many stores have a small "service animals permitted" sign on their entrances and others (like the ones here) have very large "service animals welcome" sign posted (thanks to new lawsuits). I have learned that if you want anything to happen within WM you have to hit them either in their wallet or on the image (or both!). I would organizing a group of concerned citizens and giving yourself a name, then write too and/or call WM and voice your concerns. If they don't listen or (worse) don't act get involved in the media. Your local news station is going to eat up the idea of a big bad stores being a dangerous place for children and you will probably be able to get some interviews (also with the paper) have a rally, go door to door and get signatures, rally to get national attention (like Good Morning America, etc). Once they get some spot light WM will make a policy but it is still hard to make sure that they reinforce it and may take a watchdog group. Good luck, I applaud you!...See MoreK-Mart in Peoria,IL has Moonlight Magic
Comments (41)Dana - I have swollen buds also on MM. I was worried cuz the roots were so short. The other Peaces have some some big swollen buds also. I have about 40 roses arriving next month plus some other perennials. I'm planting a hillside so DH doesn't have to mow there. I'm lucky; have 2.5 acres...lots of room. I am getting Country Dancer also along with some other great Bucks. Yesterday was great outside - 69 degrees!; cut down all my clematis and cleaned out some hydrangea beds. Now talking snow again tonight and tomorrow. What a tease! Also forgot ...have lots of clematis to offer also. They can be white or purple..they spring up all over the place. -t...See MoreIf you hate Wal Mart as much as I do ......
Comments (40)Actually, I am prepared to buy the wife a fancy, dancy sewing machine, to make me some shirts, but she is hedging due to time. I can find fabric, just not finished goods. Pants I can find.....if I want khaki, or jeans. Not much else. Of course, they keep cutting them smaller, so I keep having to increase the size, despite the fact my belt fits the exact same hole as always. The other issue, is they use nylon zippers in pants now. How stupid is that? Might be ok for a dress, but doesn't hold up at all in men's pants. Nope. I ain't getting into any more businesses, whatsoever. Too old, and more than ready to retire. If the idiots in the fashion industry can't recognize their problems, then clothes will just have to be left on the rack. Oh yeah.....used to have to take extreme measures to make garments look good in fashion......including cutting the back of women's tops, so they would hang right in the front. (grin) If you knew all the tricks and manipulations used in photographing this stuff, you would be pretty surprised. Even with beaded and sequined gowns......we used a whole lot of pinning and clipping, to "adjust" garments. The stylist was the most important person on the team. It was their job to make the garments look good on the model.....any way they could. CD of the day...."Lullaby for the Moon", koto and shakuhachi....See More- 18 days ago
