What is this? It’s not Mr. Hankey
I noticed this thing sticking straight up out of the ground this evening. I popped it out of a hole that it was in. I thought that it was some kind of dead root. It’s about the size of a cigar and looks like Mr. Hankey from the Southpark TVShow.🙂 Yes, it looks like a piece of poo.
Is it a chrysalis? Should I pop it back into the hole? Destroy it?

Comments (16)Not too many names yet...they were really waiting to find out boy or girl to start the search. I think there are 3 that have kinda been 'okayed' by both....Kason Michael, Jackson (Jack) Edward, and Hayden Michael. But it is way early...so I am SURE it will change. Sept 7 is the due date...but all this time I have thought it was Sept 4, so that is what I am going by! LOL Not sure if I will be sewing the nursery or not. Kalie is looking to see what she likes, and we will go from there. Comments (13)Hi all, Measuring out on the “flattest parts” of my yard, it looks like I have about 9” of snow on the ground from this storm! When it first started the ground was warm and the first stuff was melting, so for a “real” total, I estimate at least an inch or two more than that. I was REALLY surprised when I got up this morning! Thru the whole thing, including right up to when I went to bed last nite, it had only snowed “fine” snow, and pretty lightly most of the time, and it really didn’t seem to have added up “that” much, but “overnite,” and I was up till 2:00 a.m., “something” happened, and there was a whole bunch of it out there by daylight! I shoveled the sidewalk yesterday while it was snowing—heavy stuff since it was melting on the bottom, and then a neighbor shoveled my whole driveway (which I won’t be using!) and a “shovel wide” down my whole walk, which makes it “legal!” I was out earlier and “widened” my sidewalk, and got some of the stuff left on the neighbor’s walk! I need to get exercise somehow in winter! Wonder if we’ll get any more Big Ones this year! Zach, Mr. Snow Hater, were you here the year we had a new blizzard every week for a month or more? I think it was ‘06/’07! The first one was just before Christmas, and then they just kept going. Thousands of people were “stranded” at the airport for DAYS, and they ran out of food and everything else. I think that was the storm when United “lost” an unaccompanied minor at DIA for something like four hours—and the airline didn’t even know she was missing! And there was somebody selling Genuine Colorado Snow on eBay! The buyers, of course, had to pay the shipping! The ruts in the street in front of me were a foot deep—for most of a month! Denver had DIRTY SNOW! For at least a month! Dirty Snow is a rare creature here along the Front Range! I had lived here for more than 40 years and had never seen anything like that winter! And I’m sure I never will again in this lifetime! So, Mr. Snow Hater, it COULD be worse! How much did everybody else get this time? Skybird P.S. Did you happen to read my message to you on the Annie Laurie McDowell thread? I’m still having my emails to you returned with the message, “ Unable to deliver your email because the recipients inbox is full”. I remember getting the same thing months ago, when I tried that g_g_g address. I did take some more pictures today, including some of Mel’s Heritage from a distance. These pictures don’t really give a good sense of how large he really is. I’ve begun to think of him as “a nosey guy”, as he’s always getting into everyone else’s business. His canes are everywhere! It’s been too hot out for me lately, but now starting to cool down. About 10F less during the day, and I’m planning on getting Mel’s Heritage under control. More canes will need to be attached to the fence, some will need to be attached to small stakes along the slope(for guidance), and a few may need to be cut back. WAY BACK! He’s already climbing into Duchesse de Brabant at the bottom of the slope, and many other roses. I really cannot believe how fast he’s growing. It’s amazing and I have never seen a rose grow so quickly. Felicia is also in bloom, and I love her. Alnwick Castle is lovely today, but the blooms will blow tomorrow. They just don’t last in the dry heat. Silver Cloud, a Ralph Moore rose is having a nice flush. Too bad my Irish Creme is still tightly budded. They make wonderful vase partners. Chartreuse de Parme has such a big bloom on this tiny bush. I’m sure new growth is on the way, only in the ground a week or three. Golden Buddha, a Paul Barden rose, is one of the rare roses that truly remains compact and short here in S CA. I wish it didn’t fade so much, but I do have it in full sun. Abraham Darby always seems to have at least a bloom or two between big flushes. That’s it for the moment. I will be back with some Bolero blooms. What matters is what plant will grow in the site conditions you have in CANADA to give you a similar look. PS. It looks too tall in a number pf pictures to be ivy. Nicole, I had to look up Hawk Moth, and then I realised they are what I see in my lilac bushes every year. I just went out and took a picture.
I have those all over my yard. I often mistake them for hummingbirds at first.Outside Playing, I thought about putting it in a jar. I think that I would if I had grandchildren and they could watch with me. My now grown daughter had a little butterfly house that she had a chrysalis in, and I remember how excited she was when the butterfly emerged.
I’m going to leave it where it is, and hopefully I’ll be there when it starts to come out.
last yearRoxsol, Cecropia or polyphemus don’t bury in the ground like this. Plenty of the big ones, like the Imperial moth do though. So do the tobacco hornworms. We had a cecropia emerge not long ago. put her in a tree, and she attracted a male.

Well, I just found it lying about half a metre from the hole. 😕 A bird maybe ? I brought it into the house and placed it into a Bonne Maman jam jar. I don’t think the jar is big enough so I’ll look for another.
vgkg, there is no hook on the end of it as far as I can see.
tsug, yes, I believe you are correct, a Snowberry Clearwing. I tried to take another photo, but they don’t sit still, do they?
They’re all over my lilac bushes, with the bees, and butterflies.
Anyhow, the pupa is now in a jar.Thanks to you all. I’ll let you know what develops.
