Remembering this event, then hearing this CSN & Y song surprised me. I burst into sobs.

I live very close to Kent state university, whenever I drive there one of the first things I see in Kent is part of the university where the shootings took place. It was and will always be a very sad day in American history we really shouldn't repeat.

I think it's a stretch to compare National Guard troops mistakenly and tragically shooting bullets at students on a campus in efforts to quell public protest, to what's happening in LA. Protests are lawful and must be tolerated so long as they're peaceful and non-violent, but I think there were instances in LA of that not being the case. Maybe I'm wrong.

LAPD has stated publicly the protests have mainly been peaceful.

Paramount is a separately incorporated city, not part of the City of LA. It uses the LA County Sheriff's organization for policing.

A report I saw said the protest involved bottle throwing and two deputies were injured and taken to the hospital. A car was burned.

In downtown LA, part of the city, the crowds hampered access to a federal building, where of course many people need to get in and out of just in the course of everyday affairs.

I don't accept the need to overreact, nor the need to call in military forces using trumped up scenarios (cool use of the word, eh?) when it's beyond what's necessary. But peaceful marchers don't injure law enforcement officers.

Whenever there are large crowds gathered, there always seem to be individuals bent on mayhem who show up and ruin things for the rest.

I will never forget that day.

I was a student at KS at that time/date - very sad and horrific. I transferred to OSU after that term. I did not witness the shooting but I was on campus. Tragic. I had nightmares for months.

I knew one of the girls killed that day, So tragic.

The image of the stunned young woman in the black and white photo is seared into my memory along with those two photos taken in Vietnam — the young girl, burned with perhaps napalm, running in the street; and the man being shot in the head at very close range.

Cannot un-see those.

I won a Pulitzer Prize in 1969 for a photograph of one man shooting another. Two people died in that photograph: the recipient of the bullet and GENERAL NGUYEN NGOC LOAN. The general killed the Viet Cong; I killed the general with my camera. Still photographs are the most powerful weapon in the world. People believe them, but photographs do lie, even without manipulation. They are only half-truths. What the photograph didn’t say was, “What would you do if you were the general at that time and place on that hot day, and you caught the so-called bad guy after he blew away one, two or three American soldiers?” General Loan was what you would call a real warrior, admired by his troops. I’m not saying what he did was right, but you have to put yourself in his position. The photograph also doesn’t say that the general devoted much of his time trying to get hospitals built in Vietnam for war casualties. This picture really messed up his life. He never blamed me. He told me if I hadn’t taken the picture, someone else would have, but I’ve felt bad for him and his family for a long time. I had kept in contact with him; the last time we spoke was about six months ago, when he was very ill. I sent flowers when I heard that he had died and wrote, “I’m sorry. There are tears in my eyes.”

i am almost afraid to turn the news on this morning for fear of what i will see happened overnight in LA.
