what happened to cocoa?

suddenly there is no cocoa in the store and I was not aware that there was a shortage until I googled it. I had heard about the cocoa being in danger and I guess this is it. Said to be due to drought and some other more political cause. I am so surprised!!!

So I looked on Instacart, and it showed me Hershey's at first then changed the whole page and showed some of the kinds of brands you can get at Whole Foods, plus Guittard. Wow. I did hear about the drought, etc. I have too much on hand, but with holidays coming people are going to have to make other baking plans. The candy companies are probably well stocked for now, since they usually make their offerings months ahead. But wow.

I was listening to someone from a chocolate making professional body who was saying that with global warming, there has been drought, which has adversely affected cocoa production. In addition, one of the main producers (Sierra Leone, iirc) has regulations preventing them planting drought resistant varieties of cocoa in the hope of pushing up prices if there is a shortage.

It is not uncommon for roses to have basal canes with prickles and flowering laterals that are sparsely armed or even unarmed. We encounter this sometimes when we are trying to ID unknown roses. One says their found rose can't be the same as some named variety because theirs has no prickles. Eventually, upon closer inspection, we find that the flowering canes are thornless, but the basal canes, sometimes even only the base of the basal canes, have prickles. Come to think of it, it wouldn't surprise me if the budwood or cutting used to propagate Hot Cocoa were unarmed, but eventually, new basals with normal armature emerged. I saw the same thing on my ownroot Tamora. The young growth the first year was sparely armed, but the first major hefty basal - and every subsequent basal - was massively thorny.

oh gosh....I live here in Brevard County...Kennedy Space Center is great if you've not been there. The MI refuge is good, too, and there is another area with lots and lots of ducks, -well, waterbirds-, usually several gator...you just never know. It's the Viera Wetlands at Wickham and 95. And then there is Rockledge Gardens (a retail nursery) on US 1 in Rockledge...our Brevard Zoo is one of the nicest I've ever visited...lots of beautiful plants and great walkways thru the woods....email me for more info on the area if you'd like...I'll give you my phone number in email. carp!!!! i just went down there.. to get the dregs out of the old bag... looked at the new bag.. and didnt think to register the name ... OK i will walk down there right now ... BTW... no recollection of the seedlings.. care to post a pic some time.. and not buried in this post ... i am currently using up a 12 year old bag of: scott's metromix 360 ..... stored dry.. these huge bags have a half life of FOREVER .... buy an extra plastic garbage can.. and make sure it gets and stays dry ... my new 3 cubic foot bag.. unopenned.. from local high end nursery is: Berger BM8 .. the 8 is mixed with compost ... i would have also bought a bag of mini chunks if i were potting trees ... or walked out to one of my woodchip piles ... and just mixed in one pot for ever 2 ... or 1/3 chips .... cost for 3 cu foot bag was around $17 ... what are you guys paying at bigboxstore for what size .... ken

Merrifield Garden Ctr still had some as of last Wednesday. That's the only place I know of that actually carries it all the time. I think it was about $12 per 2 cu.ft bag. My Corolla holds 8 bags easy (4 in trunk and 4 on back seat), and I have carried as many 14 bags - it's not heavy, just bulky. If you are over 65 y/o, don't forget to tell the cashier so as to get 10% discount (they never ask you but are cheerful about applying the discount). Remember that it truly does only need about an inch depth, so one bag covers a lot of square footage.

Luckily I have enough cocoa powder to last me a while because I stocked it at two houses. I use it mainly to make chocolate crinkle cookies, but I have not made those recently.

Plenty of cocoa and chocolate available here, although prices have been climbing........as they have done with nearly everything.
