The epicenter was in Malibu. Generally, there is not much in the way of damage from a 4.1 quake, and I have been in many in San Francisco. I felt them much more strongly because I tended to live in four story wooden buildings on the top or next to top floor. Tall wooden buildings shake and sway a lot more than the buildings in Los Angeles or Palm Springs.

There was a 3.0 aftershock four minutes after the 4.1, and then only very small ones after that.

It was felt as far east as Pomona, which is pretty far.

The earthquakes scale is logarithmic, not linear. Each whole digit is a 10-fold difference up or down. A 4.0 quake is 10 times stronger than 3.0, etc. . If it were linear, it would only be 33% stronger. I hope that example helps to understand the difference. To put it into context, the San Francisco quake of 1906 was estimated to have had a magnitude of 7.9. Add up the 10-fold differences with each digit change and you can see how severe the large earthquakes can be. .

Quakes in the neighborhood of 4.0 rarely do much damage.

We have recently been having a series of quakes here in the Puget Sound area. The biggest was a 4.5 . I dont think we felt it. They say they are not significant of anything. Just minor movement. When I was first here we had a 6 and you could see the slab in the basement ripple.

I mention this for others, you certainly know, 2973. There's an area around the Pacific called the Ring of Fire (it's not just a Johnny Cash lyric phrase). It's an area of volcanic activity and earthquakes.

The so-called Cascade volcanos (Washington, Oregon and northernmost California) aren't extinct. Mt St. Helens, that erupted in 1980, is in this group. So is beautiful Mt Ranier, one of the striking sights of the Puget Sound area.

Earthquakes are to be expected. Farther south where I am, similar setting in the Ring but with different dynamics. No volcanos down here.

We heard it mentioned on the news but didn’t feel anything. As mentioned, a 4.1 usually doesn’t do much.

4.1 is just a foot massage.

We here in So. Calif. have experienced earthquakes, 80-100 mph winds, and devastating fires this year.

Earth, wind and fire. The band will be at the Hollywood Bowl this summer; so appropriate.

Because of where I live we have earthquake specialists under every rock. We have active volcanos after all. So I just recently read one who says our small quakes make no difference in the great scheme of things. They dont protect us from a big one which we are due sometimes in the next hundred years or so. Still if you can read you know this stuff. I have emergency provisions.

I felt Sunday’s quake in Venice — slight movement here because of distance from the Westlake Village epicenter. (Westlake is inland — over coastal hills from Malibu.) There were a series of smaller aftershocks, but their location was named as Malibu. Even smaller aftershocks are continuing in the Malibu area, but that has been ongoing since the Malibu quake last year.
