Favorite Coffee Pod for a Keurig?

I know Keurigs are controversial for a lot of reasons--environemental for one--tossing all those plastic k-cups in the landfill. However, I getting one for an elderly person to make their life easier. What pods do you like if you use a Keurig.

We have a mini we take on road trips with us. We prefer it to the hotel coffee machines as a rule. DH likes Death Wish and i rather like it too as it’s rather strong and not bitter. Peets is also good. There are another couple we like but will have to go find my stash.

Anne, we all aren’t ” perfect” here when it comes to environmental issues. No need to explain.

Very kind of you to help out your friend.

Some machines come with the pod that you can refill. It would mean of course your friend would have to have ground beans on hand and be able to scoop it into the small pod.

I'm one of those who cannot make a good pot of coffee, because hubby and I are not coffee drinkers. If we have guests who want coffee, I usually have someone else make it or pull out a VERY old perculator which many of our friends and relatives seem to prefer. We have some good coffee stores and that is where I buy coffee. You can grind it then or buy the beans and grind at home. We have a keurig at work and there are two who especially seem to like it and use many different flavors. However most seem to prefer the old drip maker or the espresso machine. I do get the comment about a "good" cup of coffee. Occasionally, in a restaurant I might order a cup with dessert and there is one restaurant especially who has really good coffee. tina

Annie since it looks like you're taking the plunge (so to speak) here are a couple hints toward success: 1. The grind needs to be finer than drip but not as fine as espresso. Too coarse, the water will drip right through before the few seconds required to steep, too fine and you'll have trouble pushing the plunger. 2. I've found best results with two scoops of coffee and water to the "2" line. One scoop and water to the "1" doesn't steep as well. 3. For the first month of use, I rinsed and reused the filters 2 or three times but I've since decided that I like the speed and efficiency of simply popping it into the trash and getting back to life. I've yet to need a replacement supply of those tiny filters but there are deals out there for when I do. Enjoy. They have one of these units at my kids' orthodontists office. Lots of variety, even tea, but it is pretty expensive for psudo-instant coffee, around $30 per pound, IIRC. For that kind of cash, you can get some of the TOP rated coffees in the world. I use the TMM that Rhome mentions. I have used one for several years and am very satisfied, but that's just my opinion. Down and dirty cheap is a pour over cone with paper filters as mentioned by sfjeff. You can get a herkin' big one and brew directly into a thermos or carafe (try sweet maria's website). The Keurig offers convenience. Coffee is mediocre and expensive. But if you don't drink it often, maybe the expense isn't an issue if you're having to throw out stale coffee. Have you tried the coffee? Do you like it? If so, go for it. You can buy a "pod" that let's you use your own coffee when you've got the time and inclination. BTW, coffeegeek.com has a forum of consumer reviews for all types of coffee makers.

Nope, I've been drinking Peet's dark roast decaf for several years. Here's a warning about those acid reducers, as we get older ours stomach produces less acid. Low stomach acid causes the pyloric sphincter to not open when food enters the stomach. When the pyloric sphincter doesn't open properly, food is pushed back into the esophagus resulting in heart burn symptoms. I take digestive acid pills with meals and no more heart burn symptoms. Why does this matter? Because many nutrients cannot be absorbed without high enough acid levels in the stomach. So most people that take acid reducers have nutritional deficiencies not related to diet.

I have an assortment. DH likes a medium dark coffee and buys the KIrkland (Costco) medium blend for his daily morning coffee in bulk. i see its included in the next group of specials so he will pick up a couple of boxes at $6 discount. I keep some of the Starbucks stronger/darker here for guests and because I like those. I have Twinings Earl Gray and English Breakfast teas for those who prefer tea and a few hot chocolate pods for children. Clearly, we aren't that choosy. The Safeway store brand in Costa Rica style aren't bad either although not quite as dark as I might like 😊

Do you know what brand of coffee your friend is currently using? Chances are it comes in pods, too. Seems like almost all coffee comes in pods these days. That would be a good place to start. Personally, I like Folger's Black Silk for my everyday coffee. I've tried a few other brands, but always go back to the Black Silk. Before that, I used Dunkin Dark Roast, but it seems they have stopped making it.

I have one of the plastic refillable pods that I bought, thinking it would be better than adding the disposable pods to the landfill. But I hate using it, it's more of an aggravation to fill than a regular drip basket it. And I think most of the plastic pods made these days are recyclable.

Great ideas--thank you! I am going to buy several of your suggestions. I don't thnk they are fussy--I just want to make it nice.

I just remembered Starbucks French Roast was one we did like. I personally didn’t like Dunkin coffee at all, but I’m fairly picky about coffee and drink it black most of the time.

I believe Rusty is correct and most of the pods used today may be recycled. We don’t use them often, so I don’t worry about the few we do use.

I use the Green Mountain brand, their Breakfast Blend (regular and decaf) as I do not like dark roast coffee. The brand has several strengths/types.

It just started snowing lightly here in middle Massachusetts -- think I'll go for a decaf right now!

Nothing comes close to Cometeer. My kids get them for me for my birthday. They are the best you will ever try.
