Recommendations for a jewelry cleaner brand

We decided to buy an ultrsonic jewellery cleaner. I started looking at Amazon and there are so manu to chose from! i am not sure which one to buy. i guess I am looking to see if any of you have one you love and would recommend.

I used to have an ultrasonic cleaner. I don’t recall being really impressed. Since I tossed it I’ve used the little jar with the basket & sudsy stuff in it. Works great. I do have very nice jewelry & I do have my ring settings checked periodically. Especially my diamonds worn most often. I use the cloths to remove tarnish for bracelets & necklaces.

I had also bought an ultrasonic cleaner years ago, and like KW PNW Z8 I was not impressed. I switch between using the small jar with the basket and a cleaning pen with brush which seems to clean around ring settings quite nicely.

I worked in a jewelry store for several years and the sonic cleaner was great. Happyladi was right, you shouldn't put pearls in a sonic cleaner, and not opals either. But it works great on just about everything else. Be sure and double check the instructions for other restrictions, but I remember using a sonic cleaner all the time for great results. One of my favortie things to do at the jewelry store was to clean people's jewelry. Everyone was so happy when they got their clean jewelry back. Wedding bands were the best - I'd buff them and then clean them in the sonic and could make a ten year old gold band look brand new. And I got to do it for free. :) A sonic cleaner shouldn't affect settings. If a setting is already quite loose, then maybe it would shake the stone out, but if the stone is actually that loose, better it come out in a cleaner where the stone can be found. I've never bought off HSN, and I'm suspicious of buying things I haven't seen. If I were you, I'd go to a professional jewelry store and see what they recommend or sell. If you end up getting a sonic cleaner, I think you'll be glad you did.

Thanks everyone. For most things it looks like I can use simple household cleaners that I have on hand. However I have a diamond cut gold & silver necklace and several intricate silver mesh necklaces and a silver cloth only takes care of the top surface. When I finish wiping the surface I can see tarnish in the crevices. I will try the dawn dishwashing soap or Jannie's solution. I was rather hoping for a little less elbow grease since I have a fair number of pieces to do but perhaps this is the safest. I will let you know how it works.

So apparently virtually everything must work, just depends on personal preference. I have been very satisfied with the Weiman spray cleaner & polish and micro fiber cloth. One small spray, rub it with the grain (very important)and it shines better than new and takes about 15 seconds. Seems to last forever also, been using one can on Stove/Microwave/Fridge/Dishwasher for over 5 months now pretty regularly, at least once a week and can hardly notice there is any missing in can, so I am sure one can is going to last at least a year or more.

Hi there - I had one (actually, I think I still have it somewhere). It worked well, and I used it quite a bit at first but then the interest just faded away after about a month. It was one of those "seemed like a good idea at the time" things. However, your question was whether they work. In my experience, yes, quite well! Hmmmmm....maybe I should dig it out again. I no longer bother with the ultrasonic cleaners and I have used them for many years. The small jar with basket and brush are fine. One year my DS gave me a small steamer but when it leaked that went too. Usually I clean my jewelry enough that there isn't any build up of dirt. As for the cleaning pen, I did have one years ago and tossed it when it ran out but I read a review on Reddit where someone posted that they like the small brush and just refill it with soapy water. The description for the Connoisseur says that the liquid has polymers that help reduce scratches which I hadn't noticed before.

There are times where it would be handy to have that small pen in my bag for on-the-go sparkle. I'm going to my jewelers next week and I'll ask them.

I think anything that cuts oil/grease will work. I grabbed hydrogen peroxide out of the medicine cabinet recently to quickly clean my ring.

Are gold settings less secure than platinum? That seems likely just because the metal is softer.

Is there anything that will get calcium deposits from hard water off of a ring setting? Soak in vinegar for hours?

I went back to take another look at the pen and noticed that the site says it's safe for diamonds and the big 3 - rubies, emeralds and sapphires. I'm not sure about using the cleaner on emeralds - they tend to be brittle and often have been treated with oil. There's a list of stones that should not go into an ultrasonic cleaner or the solution - emeralds, pearls, opals, amber, blue zircon, lapis, turquoise and others.
