Heartfelt thanks to all of you for your good wishes!

It was my turn to take the treats to the senior men's gathering for coffee, cookies and conversation at the village church so I took three choices - and the minister brought a three layer cake to celebrate my 9696th birthday. (That was just a 2 digit message, but sometimes strange things happen, here!).

The road to a plaza about 2.6 + a bit miles away has been closed for rebuilding for months but now is open with restricted lanes, so after my shopping and visit to credit union, I headed back to Lambeth.

The restricted road meant no hitchhiking ... so I had to walk the whole way, carrying a heavy bag of groceries hung with a shoulder strap, which my somewhat bent back objected to.

About half way, I crossed "Pack Road", about 2 miles long, bearing my mother's family name, that was where we used to go to visit grandma in a big old white brick house. Grandpa had died before I, her firstborn, was aware: my mom lost her dad when she was quite young.

It sure was good to see the signal lights in the village, and when I got within about a block of the church a woman got out of her car at a street corner, asking, "Ed - do you need a ride?"

What a glorious message, as I was really tired! I was not looking forward to the hitchhike home, after I picked up the remnants of the snacks I'd brought.

A lovely ride the half block to the church, I picked up my snacks, offered to give them some - but when I arrived home just unloaded and forgot to make good on my offer!

This was the third time she's picked me up, the first was having her daughter with her so she was willing to take a chance. She acts as though we're old friends, gave me her name and number and is willing to drive me where I need to go sometimes.

So on arrival home ... had some more of the snacks, with coffee, and enjoyed a nice nap.

I think that I've said before - that more than half of the people who pick me up are female, mostly middle aged or older - you can see why a youngish woman would be reluctant to share her car for a few minutes with a man standing on the roadside!

It's been an interesting day.

By the way, I've tried to start a couple of discussions here, but can't find "The kitchen table" to send them to ...

... can someone tell me "where to go" (preferably with a smile - how often does one get told "where to go" - with a smile?)

I told of some of mine over on the welcome to AMY365 thread. Not much of great moment on the Friday ... but son and partner took me to a country and western band on Sat night. They're cousins - John P. Allen is the M.C. and gets his body and movements into it, and his face moves a good deal related to what he's doing. He played fiddle with the "Prairie Oyster" band for several years and recently has done a number of his own gigs. His sister, a doc, plays string bass and brother, fiddle, mandolin and trumpet were involved, and the young ones of the first two: the main female singer is taking nursing and quite vivacious - adds a good deal to the presentation. They attend one church where I go - the one which I went to as a child. The men's group in the other church had a tour of Labatt's Brewery on Monday night, so it's been an interesting weekend. ole joyful

Thanks to all of you for your good wishes. Most of the snow had gone by yesterday, but we had a bit more, overnight - for which I'm thankful ... for when I backed the car out of the shed and returned to close the door ... there was a slim trail of brown stuff going out to the car. I backed it up a bit ... and there was a brownish pool under where the motor had been. Was it oil? If so, and I drove it ... soon no oil and seized engine. Brake fluid? Tranny fluid? Drove running engine uphill, coasting down, about 8 mi. to the church to have coffee with the old guys. No trail anywhere near where I entered the parking lot or under the car. Drove to the other church, 5 mi. or so, to tell the minister of an interesting speaker, Naomi Klein, on climate change and our current world situation in town tonight. I was noticing that the gas gauge seemed to be dropping much more quickly than usual. No residue trails visible ... but I'd coasted in. Drove ... carefully, through town, in case the droppings were brake fluid ... to the garage. Fuel filter rusted out, must be replaced, along with some of the gas line. Fifteen minute walk to the library, to talk to you guys ... and it's about time to wander back, as they may have the car fixed. Good thing I visited the bank yesterday, as I was almost broke, before. Thanks again for all of your good wishes - I value my relationship with you folks, some of whom I've met IRL. ole joyfuelled ... with a bit o' fuelling help from gasoline ... and furnace oil

Glad to hear you had a good day and are out and about as usual. Recycling is an inefficient answer to the problem of too much trash. Best not to buy the 'trash' in the first place. That's hard to do, when at least half of what's on the shelf in the grocery store is *plastic* and will NEVER go away. (I heard that statistic on PBS radio this morning, a rebroadcast from the BBC.) I've just realized that I will soon reach the last year where I can offhandedly refer to being 'in my seventies'. <sigh>

It's ole joyful here again.

Had I been listening to my body at the store, I might have heard, "Hey buddy - remember those restricted lanes in the street, making it hard to hitchhike? How about putting those three small packs of half price carrots, zucchinis and peppers into that multiuse grocery bag that you just took out of me instead of carrying it empty to the church for those residual cookies?"

I had the bag in my hand at Pack Road, about half way ... but a few hundred feet later, realizing it was gone, chose not to retrace my steps, carrying the heavy bag, requiring me to cover that same ground three times.

Again, didn't listen to my body's advice, "Hey, dumb-ass, while it surely is helpful your carrying the shoulder-strap bag just above your ass, to ease the load on your bent back, how about going back for the bag, then swinging the big bag around to the front and putting some of the weight into the lost one, huh?"

Too soon old, too late smart, it looks like!

We need to listen to the wisdom of our inner selves, as we travel this life, I think.

That good luck-enabled ride home, by the person who's chosen to become a friend, surely was appreciated!

Sometimes it may help grease the wheels of society and life when we offer a smile to strangers.

Dear Mr. Joyful…formal as we’ve not yet met :) I only get to this Kitchen Table from the “Other Side”, Decorating Conversations. There, I look for a post that’s on both sides and can then come over here. I,too, enjoy your always sunny posts. Hope you had a lovey bday! You live in a village? That always sounds lovely and British, though we do have some here in the U.S. , too. Mostly New England, perhaps? Did you see carolb’s suggestion? Looks perfect for non-drivers. Your trek exhausted me just reading about it. Make it a well-deserved bday gift for yourself._and keep posting!

I hope it is OK to make a suggestion. I suggest that you start a GFM for one of those electric adult tricycles, you can either pedal them just like you would a regular adult tricycle or use the battery boost. The electricity cost is modest. I know that many would enjoy pitching in to help.

There are many different companies that make them, and you can either buy one fully equipped, or buy a kit to add to a regular tricycle. I have two regular pedal driven trikes which are a joy to ride (I'd give you one if you were closer) and will probably someday outfit one with a kit.

The address I used long ago was ths.gardenweb.com and recently when I want to change, I click on the name of the one I'm using, I move to Google, and the Houzz icon is there. So I guess I'm using the Houzz access now.

@carolb_w_fl thanks for the suggestion. Son, who's lived with me for over a year, has one, says it's useful sometimes - but a bit of a nuisance to haul around in between, and I rather agree not so great when hitchhiking. This is my third winter coping with snow, and the cart would be mainly useful in other seasons.

@lucille I thought of buying an electric bike a couple of years ago - but didn't.

Thinking of buying a car - daughter and son in law who visited last summer found one in Georgia, but we chose not to take it - then.

But the eventual almost certain move to the city, at triple current rent before son came, double the current $1,000.+ a bit or more, would be covered if it would allow us to continue living here for six months to a year longer.

@martinca-gw I've lived on what was step-uncle's farm for, come March, 20 years, renting this old farmhouse from the purchaser following his death, about 6+ miles from the village where I went to high school and about 12 - 20 miles from London, Ontario, half way between Detroit and Buffalo or Toronto - a couple of hours drive from four of the Great Lakes.

Landlord allows space for garden, cultivates it, a few years ago I ran almost a mile of rows, took veggies to a couple of churches I relate to, much smaller recently.

Story of car broken in colliision no injuries, loss of licence, hitchhike to village, bus to city, thankful for enabling health, friends advise move to city, thankful can afford it, elsewhere on this thread.

@Cherryfizz - Greetings! How have you been? How long ago was it that we met in Windsor, do you remember? It was my first face to face with Gardenweb folks. Have you connected with Dances recently? Were there others beside the three of us?

As you, I agree that a wheelie cart is no good in the winter. Any I've had or seen aren't great for long distances as well. Can you at least get a cab or an Uber when you have to go long distances? Take care of yourself, my friend.
