Sweet potatoes.....

There are all sorts of different kinds of sweet potatoes. some even come in colors other than orange. This year I bought my sweet potatoes from Aldi's. IDK if it is the type of potato or how it was grown. but most of them (from the several packages I bought) are orange relatively slender, about 1.5-2 inches in diameter, 6 inches long, and smooth skinned. And tasty. Anyway the shape and smoothness makes them easy to peel with a peeler, and I've been enjoying cooking them in various ways. I remember years ago growing sweet potatoes and it was fun, but when harvested they were irregular shaped so these are an improvement in handling and just as tasty as the ones I remember growing.

Sweet potato slips have gotten so expensive. I now just save a few smaller potatoes over the winter and make my own slips. I also have volunteer plants that just come up on their own. I grow potatoes too but I don't even save seed for them because they just come back on their own.

One of the biggest ones I've ever grown, from last year. I grew it in the grow bag.

We bought some Red Garnet SPs from Whole Foods several years ago and have saved the slips annually since back then. They are good, sweet, custard-like and don't split with heavy rains. The mother plants will grow nice size bakers and the vines that re-root will grow those nice slender peelers you describe. I call them "hotdogs" and they are perfect for peeling like big carrots and using in "Yams" style casserole dishes.

Likewise I have never planted sweet potatoes in a container or bags. But have seen pictures of those who have and they just let the vines spread out over them and down to the ground. And from the reports I've read they produce well. Production is very hard to predict. Weather conditions can cause production to change a lot. The same varieties I dug up to nine pounds in 010 from didn't produce a pound after the hail and the hot, droughty summer last year. And the one I planted in mid July produced several tubers but none as large as the one they were produced from. I would say the most I dug last season was around 5 pounds. The same variety that produced nine pounds the year before. So very hard to predict. And then again growing in a bag, container may affect production also. Jay
