Just had a odd experience with Experian

The metropolis near which I live had a major data breach this past year; they are offering 3 years of free credit protection to all involved residents via Experian ID Works.

I just tried to sign up online, and as I was going through the typical identification authentication questions, none of them applied to me. Phone number, license plate, street number, checking account number, car model, car year....none were ever mine. Finally, choices for a street NAME came up - and included one that I recognized: not any of mine, but that of my 12 years deceased mother!

I suspect that it happened because in her last 3 years before her stroke and ECF stay, she had me on her checking account. Of course I no longer have, or recall, any of those old numbers. Why her car model/year & license plate (assuming one of the choice was hers) would have been associated with me is a mystery (in fact, she sold her last car in 2004, and only used the bus or walked after that.)

I called the Experian customer service number but she said that there was nothing she could do about it, and to try again after waiting 72 hours. We shall see how that works out!
