Ooh, I know this . The purple dye used to dye royal robes/clothing in ancient times was very expensive, so not used by common folk. And, for once, I am early.

Blue? Purple? Why, IDK, but I would guess that it had something to do with the availability or lack thereof of the particular dye?

Tyrian purple made from Murex snails was not only so expensive you had to be royalty to use it, there was also a law that only royalty could wear "the purple" . It was actually a reddish blue or even blue depending on how it was made. But blue was an ordinary color because it could be made from readily available plants like woad.

That is so interesting about the snails, I had to look it up.
