Many years ago, I used to style my hair with different hair pieces. I'm too lazy now. I would find out if there is a wig shop in your area so you can have someone color match a piece to your hair. Be sure to look at anything you're considering under both artificial lights and natural light. Not necessary for a wig, but to get a decent quality, I still would look for a wig shop or a salon that specializes in them. Lots of women buy them when undergoing chemo, so I would think most communities have someplace you can buy them. Have fun!

I've been intrigued too with trying a wig. I have horrible hair that may look good every so often and I've just gotten used to it. I used to try all sorts of things but just got too lazy.

When I see wigs presented on some of the tv shopping channels, I can sit and watch for a full presentation but I haven't yet pushed the button.

There really aren't any wig stores around anymore and I think honestly for a good one, it's going to be $$$ and I am too cheap to spend it to try it out.

I am going to follow along because I I can absolutely understand wanting to try it.

I am totally fascinated by wigs and find myself watching YouTube videos reviewing different brands. I have never worn one. I would love the versatility of being able to change the look of my hair with as much ease as I change my lipstick. My natural hair is too long and too thick to fit under a wig.

For a ’Fall’, ’Bun’ ’Extension’ or other type of ’Hairpiece’ that matches your own hair color, walk in to any beauty product supply store (Sally Beauty is one) and look at the offerings.

I agree that it's best to go to a wig shop first to get a professional to show you what would be the best pieces for what you want to accomplish. Once you know that, you can usually find it online. Pieces made of human hair are expensive and need to be styled. Synthetic pieces stay styled, but can be overly shiny and need to be washed and, sometimes, powdered to look closer to real hair.

We have a population of Orthodox Jews nearby and the married women cover their hair with a wig. There is a very nice wig shop near their community, so you might consider that .

Theres also one hairdresser who specializes in wigs for hair loss but they are very expensive.

Well, I’ll be darned! I went to school with a lot of Jewish kids and I never knew that. (Most weren’t Orthodox Jews, though)

I learned something new today.

You should be able to find a proper wig store with people who know their products and how to use them - at least if you're in (or have access to) a reasonably sized city. I've thought about it in the past (the never-needs-cutting short style I'd like), but there are just too many other places I'd like to spend that money.

The wig for married Orthodox Jewish women is called a sheitel. It is to show modesty.

Many people start with an inexpensive synthetic wig ordered online. If it is appealing and easy to wear, they then go on to the pricier ones, some which can be very costly. Beyonce reportedly spends huge amounts on her wigs.

Some synthetic wigs are very good (and somewhat more expensive) but overall reasonable in cost, especially for those who wear it because they have thinning hair or have lost hair due to treatments for cancer. Even though they may be recognizable as wigs, they often look better than the alternatives and are valued by their wearers.

Whatever effect I'm going for, I go all in. It's for fun, and artistic.

If it makes you happy and feel better I say go for it. It makes me smile just thinking about Amylou and her possible wigs on the holidays.

ooh ded, I never thought about a wig store there. I must have had my parameters off or something when I've looked for wig stores. ... However, as I said, I'm kinda not wanting to spend much on it but I guess if I got to try one on and thought it was perfect.... who knows...

I went through a 'stage' but its been many years ago now. A good friend met and married a young woman in Australia on his last R&R, coming home from Vietnam. She was a stylist and genius with the 'up-do's' that were popular then, also wigs and hair pieces.

I had toppers, falls, full wigs and more than than one of the wash and wear synthetics with her help and direction. My own hair was long then, and the freedom from not having to wash, dry, style was liberating since I was in college classes and working too.

I outgrew the trend and don't think I'd enjoy it now. When my sister was undergoing chemo I found I still had one synthetic wig here. Its Noriko, believe more than one of my pieces were.

The wig was pretty 'fluffy' and auburn, it didn't suit her coloring at all. A womens cancer group gave her - no cost - a fitting and a lovely silver wig identical to her own hair color. Her daughter in law styled it for her and it could not have been prettier!

On a different forum, some shared a topper.

Not a source, but the Chiquel page on Facebook features a lot of nice wigs. The brands of featured wigs may have toppers. Happy hunting!

I had brain surgery little over a year ago and they shaved my head. It was getting thin on top before that and never really grew back. I looked at all the wigs available, both online and at a store. The prices at the store were insane. After months of seaching I decide on Godiva's Secret. DH says it looks pretty natural. Most of the time I just wear a head scarf. I wear the wig when I want to get dressed up. Also they were good about returns. I think I sent back 4 before I found one I liked.

I have a couple of wigs that look completely different from my own hair. They were under $40. I got them for entertainment purposes. I've never actually worn one anywhere outside of home. I consider them a variation on wearing lingerie. It's just an occasional thing, but my husband appreciates the effort.

My friend lost her hair from chemo and bought a wig to look like her own hair. She could afford the best, but told me that she preferred synthetic because they were much easier to wash. She bought it at a store that catered to people who'd lost their hair, and there was a stylist right at the store. I was with her a few times when people complimented her "haircut."

I'm taking a break, and just now skimming over the answers. I think I'm going to lean towards the having fun side!

My hair style that gets the most compliments? It's a ponytail that I divide into five different pieces, curling each to my scalp. Secure it with a bobby pin. A rubber band and five bobby pins is my idea of easy peasy
