I think it's just part of the programming and no one thinks to disable it. Maybe it can't be, I would think the band would be embarassed by that. I much prefer giving a cash donation to buying crap I don't want so the kids can get a small percentage.

I donate to political causes and once in a while to go fund me things. They ask for tips at all the sites to supposedly cover the business expenses of running the sites. I’m sure there’s money being made in the transactions without tips, but in some cases the beneficiaries don’t get 100% of your donation because some fees are deducted. Too bad they call it a tip. I always reduce the tip to $2 on $100 donation, unless they state that the beneficiary will have to pay fees. Then I cover the fees.

That would be a hard ”No” for me.

When I decide to make a contribution, it's about how much I want to spend. Not how much the recipient ultimately receives or how much winds up supporting whatever specific activity they may be soliciting money for.

If I decide to contribute $X, I would ignore and be somewhat put-off by a response asking "how about $X plus $Y?". And I would probably choose to not contribute anything to that organization in the future.

I think political contributions are nothing more than legalized graft for politicians and organizations and I would never give a cent for such things. Nothing in my opinion would do more to enhance the fair functioning of our democracy than to have such practices banned. To do so would require support of the very people who benefit from such money and so it will never happen.

My firm has an indirect and not legally affiliated PAC for which it annually solicits large contributions from partners. Many participate, I never have. Money is generally split equally to pols of each party. The activity is described as important to allow us to have "access" and to have our voice and concerns heard. No thanks,.

This last time I got my hair cut, instead of letting me decide how much of a tip to give, my hairdresser held up her phone (or some device) in my face listing a selection of tip amounts she'd accept. I was surprised and just hit the first one - 10% - the amount of $7 showed up. I was embarrassed but didn't change it. I've gone to her for a long time now and usually give $15 - $20 esp. for a perm. On the way home I kept thinking how big of a cheap skate she must have thought I was. lol So next time I'll explain and give her some extra.

I really don’t like the apps they present you with giving you only a few choices for tips. Guess it can make the math easier, but it seems every type of business now is asking for tips, via those apps. I’m not inclined to tip my fish monger when I’ve just spent $100 on a piece of fresh salmon!

Regarding the OP’s actual question, I think I’ve seen that sort of thing, maybe on GoFundMe? Or do they ask for the specific processing fee, I’m not sure. Either way, I’m not inclined to do it. What I’ve decided to contribute is what I’ve decided to contribute.

While I do understand that they speed things up and are more efficient than paper, I HATE those payment things servers are handing you. Then stand there watching (even if not literally) as you’re rushed to enter a tip. Some restaurants have QR codes on the tab which you can scan to do essentially the same thing at your pace from the privacy of your phone. I prefer that.

Either way, I’ve found that for me I’m tipping less this way because manually I base my tip on the full check whereas the machines base the percentage on the pre tax total. Plus manually, I always round up which the machine doesn’t do. So the server loses out.

Regarding tipping culture in general, I’m over it. I tip for traditionally tipped services. The rest, I’m not getting guilted into tipping just because there’s a jar out or a line on the bill.

I hate tipping - prices should be upfront and known ahead of time. I always feel like I am being gouged when asked for tips - I think the whole process is unfair to everyone.

A lot of times people bargain for lower prices, but in the case of tipping, people are bargaining for higher prices, and I wish prices would just be what they are. Europe is much more civilized than us in this respect, and I think Japan is also. Some Japanese restaurants in L.A. have signs saying that tipping is now allowed.

Even when I'm paying by card, I tip in cash. What I resent is when I go to the bakery and they solicit a tip for putting a cookie in a bag.

Is the US alone in expecting a customer to pay certain employees directly? Why doesn't a restaurant pay its employees -- just as every other business pays salaries, bonuses, whatever? Instead of irradicating the practice, this has now led to tipping anyone who interacts with the public. Now the government has somehow decided that payments called 'tips' are not taxable. (Will they not count towards Social Security down the road?)

I don't buy the argument that a waitperson's dependence on the customer's favor 'insures prompt service'. No restaurant will survive if the customer isn't happy -- same as the plumbing company, the clothing store, the supermarket. Hiring good employees is part of doing business.

Oh, people will rebel when they see the total cost of eating out, up front, on the menu! Customers want to be Mr. Big or Ms. Judgemental, 'evaluating' the waitperson. (Why not the rest of the staff -- the chef, the cooks, the janitor?)

It seems to me that only a self-employed person should expect to be paid directly. That's payment, not a tip, not 'charity'.. and it is taxable income.

Chisue, you have just made a very important point about businesses using tips to pay employees that do not counting towards their retirement. I never thought of how your social security payment would be affected.

I’ve been wondering about the social security aspects of not taxing tips and overtime wages. But social security and medicare is actually ’witholding’ not taxes so not sure what the reality would be.
