sweet potato vine as groundcover???
Comments (9)That's exactly how the edible sweet potatoes grow, but they are plain green and not terribly ornamental. Sweet potatoes are fun plants to grow, they are very fast and easy, do well in full and even partial sun, are extremely heat-tolerant and moderately drought-tolerant. They can be especially effective draping over a wall or ledge. The main problem is that you have to keep after them, otherwise they will take over your bed and smother all your other plants! I saw a fabulous planting last year that combined ornamental grasses with 'Blackie' sweet potatoes--it was a great combination, with the contrast of both texture and color....See Moregrowing sweet potatoe slips
Comments (6)RcWeston, Your sweet potato must come from a variety with purple foliage. There are quite a few. They're beautiful and practical. I have started slips from grocery store sweet potatoes. Not every one will do. But usually, out of several, by this time of the year, there is one with little sprouts starting to form. Also, it's often possible to get one to start sprouting by keeping it warm and exposing it to light and moisture. The sweet potatoes produced from such slips are usually quite good.
